Painting stainless steel
Will stainless steel maintain its properties (stain less - being more resistant to rust than steel) if painted with cerakote or duracoat?

Why wouldn't it? You're not changing the composition of the metal only puttin' a coating on it. If you somehow manage to improperly coat the metal and trap moisture or other corrosive agents against it, than all bets are off.

Sure it will. Some Sig's and the S&W M&P's are stainless slides with a finish on it. I'm sure there are others out there too I just cant think of them off the top of my head.

Yes. And it would also be a great way to get rid of that hideous "Stainless" look of many guns. I've never been able to stand the "In the White" look of stainless guns.

The coating should not cause any rust issues over a stainless steel gun.

Yes, Stainless steel will keep it's corrosion resistant properties as long as the finish is applied correctly. An air dryer in the air line used to spray the finish will keep moisture from getting "mixed in" with the finish. More attention to detail is required while abrasive blasting the Stainless steel surface that's getting the new finish. Normally, you can see where the abrasive blaster stream is hitting due to the old finish, rust, scale, etc. being blasted off and showing nice clean metal. Stainless steel won't show the same way. It's more a matter of holding the part in the light while blasting it to see where the shine is. If it shines, it hasn't been blasted. Abrasive blasted Stainless steel will have a very matte surface.
Coating Stainless steel without abrasive blasting it, is a waste of time. The new finish won't stick. Just "degreasing it and spraying the new finish on" as one manufacturer suggest will just result in a mess. Keep yer powder dry, Mac. Tuff-Gun Finishes. The Name Says It All.
