Looking for an AR
Not to sound insulting, but I want the equivalent of a "Glock" AR chambered in 223/556 that is durable, not finicky about ammo, and a no-brainer to maintain.
Price point is about a grand, and I just plan on using iron sights. I want to use it for hog hunting. I recently had shoulder surgery and my lever action rifle gives me nasty bursitis and semi seems the way to go. There's just too many options out there, and every gun store tells me that their mystery brand I've never heard of makes the "best" AR. |

Re: Looking for an AR
You aren't going to find an AR that you can keep as dry as a Glock and still have it function at that level. If you want a quality, top of the line AR then my vote goes to Colt or Daniel Defense (not in that particular order). Yes, they are a little over $1,000 but that is what they are worth and in the current market you will probably pay even more than you would have about 6 months ago.
And while you may like iron sights, I would bet that you will quickly want to add an optic. Either an Aimpoint, Eotech, or a 1-4x optic would serve you well. |

How about the Colt 6900? It's under a grand...
I've heard that it's a "cheap" Colt by some (my Colt know-how is limited to 1911s). |

Re: Looking for an AR
I would leave it. It does not have all of the pieces that a standard AR does. It is missing the forward assist and dust cover, and that is just from taking a quick look at the cosmetics. If you want the AR that you say you do, then it will cost you more than $1,000. And it would have before Newtown as well.

Figures.
I saw a Monolith 6940 around these parts for 1600 and it seemed steep, but I guess if you want to save money in the long run you can't buy cheap. Now I just have to find out what to trade for it. |

Colt 6920 for around $1100 is the best compare that I can think of. No-nonsense AR that is built to be thrown down your driveway and function flawlessly. There are others out there but they will cost you.
I'd also look at Spike's Tactical and BCM. Both are equally as solid, reliable and rugged. |

There's a lot of great AR's out there and you don't have to spend a fortune to acquire one.
With that said, I would suggest you look into the Huldra line of AR's, the Elite model runs around $1,600 and comes bare bones except for 6-30 round mags. It's a gas piston, so it runs incredibly clean and can run in an almost dry condition if need be. You will notice it comes standard with some serious upgrades such as an ion-bonded bolt carrier group, a melonited chamber & barrel plus a Jpoint trigger. You won't find many internet reviews but those you will find are all very positive, so don't be held back by a lack of reviews, as this AR might very well be the "Glock" of the AR's because it just keeps going & going and going. http://www.huldraarms.com/rifles/product_914ffd5b2cff/ |

Good names mentioned above, Colt, BCM, Daniel Defense and Spikes. I'd add PSA too. I have BCM, DD and PSA and can recommend them highly. Google the two DD torture tests if you want an eye opener!

I've owned five Bushmasters and still own four. Never looked any further. All mil-spec and none have ever been picky.

I have this one. Its a solid carbine. Underrated if you ask me.
http://www.del-ton.com/DTI_16_Carbin...rfth16-moe.htm Didn't pay $1000 for it but you would never know that from the way it looks and runs. |

Bushmaster may have been better in the past and if you have one that's working out, that's fine ... but if buying today there ARE reasons to look further. |

Go to search on here and type in Huldra. You will see some of my posts about them. I have two of them. They are good guns. I have about 3000 rds through each of them.

You cant go wrong with Colt, DD, PSA, Smith, Spikes, I know that doesn't help narrow it down but it is what it is.

Colt BCM and Daniel defense are truly "mil spec" quality metals. PSA has premium AR builds that atr truly Milspec. BCMs website defines what makes a "milspec rifle / carbine. Read up and see what a milspec is http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-M...ight-s/150.htm

If you have $1100 to spend, you can't go wrong with the Colt 6920.

DPMS aren't bad and would fall into your price range. Just my .02. More seem to be showing up as of late.

If you really wanted "the equivalent of a Glock that is durable, not finicky about ammo, and a no-brainer to maintain" you should go with an AK
Maybe a Saiga in 223/5.56 or any decent AK47/74. Otherwise, your top AR choice for around $1k is the Colt6920. Look around the Walmarts in your area and see if any of them have it. I believe they were about $1097 when I last saw them. They are hard to find but they will pop up every once in a while (unicorns as I call them lol). Other good choices are BCM, Daniel Defense, Spikes, and PSA. Even the Sig M400 is still a good choice in your price range. Good luck hunting for one and let us know what you decide. |

I've had a good experience with my M&P-15s. I've owned two, probably a combined total 0f 15,000 rounds between them, and never a fail-to-fire that wasn't a mag-issue.

As others have said, you can't go wrong with a Colt 6920. Great quality and the best resale value out there.

I think you would be better looking at specs and then figuring out which rifle meets those specs, then looking at direct comparisons.
The rifle I would build given your specs would have a barrel with a 5.56 chamber, M4 ramps and melonited. It would have a bomb proof gas system, stainless and or melonited, simple lock ring muzzle device and an easily removable hand guard, maybe like a Troy. The bolt would be a JP with QPQ coating, enhanced bolt, POF roller cam and a carbine length buffer tube and a XP buffer spring. Trigger a drop-in from CMC or POF. No oversized anything. Probably looking at about $1300 to $1500 to buy the parts. If you can get a smith to install the barrel in the receiver, everything else is child's play. A rifle like that, properly set-up can be run dry for about 1K rounds with no issues. But it is better run greased and oiled for range sessions. You are not going to be able to touch anything like that from any maker mentioned above for any price. Sure, there are some better parts, but then the reliability starts to wane. |
