Nosler Balistic Tip

.30 cal. 150 and 165 grain variations. I've been hearing stories on how they sometimes litterally blow up on contact with game. Huge gaping holes on the "on side". Sometimes huge holes on the "off" side. Any stories on this from ya'll?

Not on the near side from me. On the far side, sure. You might get blowups with one of the big magnums at close range but not likely with a .308 or .30-06.

I ain't much of a hunter, but I usta spend time with a serious meat hunting crew. Seen 30-40 deer killed with .30 cal. BTs and the earlier SBs, mostly 165s. Those boys did not mind wasting a quarter if they anchored the deer. They went to the Noslers because they were losing deer to failure to expand on rib shots on smallish southern whitetails.

Ballistic Tips are made for long range expansion and "practical velocities" per Nosler. The bullet exploding on impact might happen with rocket launchers (aka large magnums) at close range.

I don't have any experience with the 30 cal variations, but my 22-250 will push them to 3900 fps with no problems.

exploding Noslers

Every bullet is built to perform at a particular terminal velocity.

Subject to range involved, velocity at point of impact and how solid the target is (ie presence of bone etc) bullet may under expand, over expand or work just fine.

I use 120 gr BT's in my 7x57 and 125 grain BT's in a 30-30 Ackley Improved and 225 grain ones in a 35 Whelen.

I don't have problems with the 30-30 Ackley improved because it is a lot slower than a lot of 30 cals- as is the 7x57.

I suggest you not try for max horsepower with these bullets as if they are run very fast they will blow up.

I think that the Nosler blow up in flight is all BS! I have used Nosler from everything to 222s to 30-06 with no problems. I used Nosler 130gr ballistic tip in my 270 with good results. Remember the bullet is full of lead. I have shot deer with the BTs that left a big hole all the way through the neck! like a 2 inch hole. The hydraulic shock must have been awesome.

I did see a 25-06 with BTs blow up on impact with a deer and not go through the deer but it killed it dead on impact. What was left of the bullet made it to the other side of the deer just under the skin.

I have been using the Nosler BT 200gr in my 338 Win mag for years, never had any problems, good mule deer bullet using the 338 win mag, accuracy was excelant to say the least, one hole at 100 yards is good enough for me
But if you are experencing separation as you say, go to the Nosler Partition/Fail safe's, this is a bullets that will not separate under most conditions, very hearty bullets. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Loaded some for a friend in 30-06 at about 2800fps. They were used to kill a couple of antelope. Both bullets exited with minimal destruction--both Antelope DRT. Both shots were between 100 and 200 yds.

I've had great success with Nosler BTs - very accurate and deadly on all North American game, including elk and caribou.

What prompted this was that I went to the Midway site and they will let folks "rate" a product. Out of, I think, 5 posts three were talking about how the bullit just fubared the animal. I would like to shoot the B.T. but I hunt for the meat too. I would cringe at the thought of wasting a good shoulder roast!

Thanks to all for the input!
