New Colt SAA with with wire tie
Why do they insist on putting wire ties on these guns? Just got a beautiful Colt SAA, blue and case colored hardening and it came with a darn wire tire wrapped through the cylinder and around the hammer very, very, very tightly! Getting it off is going to be a real PITA!

It's a cheap safety lock. Allows someone to see quickly that the gun is not operable. There are better ideas: Ruger uses a little yellow plastic chamber filler. Maybe you should just buy new Rugers...

Colt wants you to think of SAAs as art, or collectables, or investments, or something innocuous like that instead of weapons. Therefore they tie them down so you can resell them with the assurance they have not been shot or even turned. Phooey.

They tie them down because the average person who would pick one up does not know how to handle a traditional single action properly. Most people will drop the hammer from the half cock notch, then rotate the cylinder by hand until the bolt engages the notch. Now you have your ring. Or they spin the piss out of the cylinder like they see in the movies. Slam-cocking is also a popular pastime. I'm sure there are those idiots who would actually fan a brand new gun that does not belong to them as well. USFA takes out the bolt (maybe the hand too) when they set up a display at the SHOT Show because they report that if they didn't, the guns wouldn't be fit for the used market by the end of the event.
A well-timed traditional single action will not show a ring if it is handled properly. I buy my guns to shoot but I sure as hell don't want to spend $1200 on a sixgun that some idiot put a ring on because he learned his gun handling skills from Hollywood. |

CraigC,
So very well put. So many single action revolvers are advertised for sale with "the normal ring around the cylinder". Unless there is something wrong with the revolver, there will be no ring around the cylinder if it is handled correctly. I would rather see mushroomed nipples from dry firing one than to see the ring. |

Colt doesn't tie them down at the factory. We do it here on guns that we get in.
