Fellow Hunters
Well I purchased my hunting rifle last year and she only has 20 rounds through her only at the range. Have not been hunting yet...I would LOVE to take my first deer with a reloaded round.
Couple Questions: (feel in blanks with what you suggest) Rifle: Savage AXIS Caliber: .308 WIN Bullet: Hornady Interlock 165grain Powder: H414 COL: Case Length(prior to loading) Grain: Primer: CCI #200 or Tul Ammo Standard LR Full case length or collet neck size only? Scope is set at 50 yards as well.

Do you have a couple of reloading manuals? What do they show for your components?

Buy a Reloading Manual
1. Buy a Reloading Manual
2. Read it. 3. Look up the data you need from the manufactures websites: http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp http://www.alliantpowder.com/ http://www.nosler.com/load-data/ http://www.accuratepowder.com/load-data/

You didn't specify the cartridge but I'm guessing either .308 or .30-06, as H414 will make for a decent load in either. Could even be a 7mm cartridge with that powder and bullet. To fill in your blanks, the COL specified in a Hornady manual for that bullet, and that starting powder charge for that particular powder/bullet load, and the trim-to length specified in the manual for your "mystery cartridge"

How can we answer your questions safely and accurately if we don't know what cartridge you are reloading for?

Wow...that's what I get for posting before getting a nap. Added the much needed information.
Guys I'm looking for what fellow hunters run...not WHAT the grains, etc are. A lot of people hunt with this rifle and I was curious about recipes not load data. I already have all my load data. I have a 4 grain window with this bullet(48-52) and was curious as if fellow hunters release their recipes for their rifle.

People were stating get reloading manuals, etc. I have them. Just curious where other reloaders fine tuned in(their data). I've heard both stories from full size and neck collet users.

Fellow Hunters
I have a Savage Axis in .308 as well. You want to check what OAL your rifle can use. The throat in mine is very long, so my OAL is actually longer than what the book states and still able to fit the magazine with plenty of room to spare.
If you have the Hornady OAL gauge, use it. You'll be able to tweak your OAL with it. I'm not using mine for hunting yet, but plan to make up a hunting round using 150gr Nosler Partitions over IMR4895. Good luck and have fun. I love the way mine shoots with my reloads. |

I started loading that bullet in my .308 but mine is built on a 1909 Argentine Mauser action.
I use RL15 and I seat the bullet out to 3 or 4 thousandths of an inch from the lands. I started with the beginning load in the book and it shot so well, I've never bothered loading it any hotter. Before switching to the 165g Hornady, I was using a 180g Nosler ballistic tip boat tail and these also shot fantastic at the starting load in the book. I typically get .5 MOA at 100 yards and if I need more power than this, I still have my '06. Tony |
