Crimps for .357 Mag.

I've just started reloading this caliber. I bought a new RCBS die set and noticed that the crimp die does taper crimps. Should I consider getting a roll crimp die or is it something I can live without?

Roll crimps are really necessary only for the heaviest magnum loads, in my experience.

If you start having problems, get a roll crimp die. Until then, though, use the taper crimp die. Your brass will last longer.

I shoot a 357 revolver (several differ makes). I haven't had much luck with seating/crimping working; soooooo I bought redding roll crimp die and put a healthy crimp on every thing. seems to work for me.......

I use a Redding Profile crimper also for 357 mag and really like. I have to admit that it took me until recently to figure out that my 357 mag die is a taper crimp also. I had never used it because of the redding so I did not even notice.

I have been loading for 35 years and using a TAPER CRIMP for 18+ of thoose years. A taper crimp takes the flare out of the brass. To give you an example:
Unless they dies are LEE or HORNADY, you can remove the decapping stim from the sizing die; readjust the die and you have/are taper crimping.
Adjusting may take a little time....

I use Lee dies, and have never had a problem seating and roll crimping at the same time. I roll crimp if the bullet has a crimp groove, tapper crimp if it dosnt. JDG

Redding Profile Crimp die; WILL enhance accuracy and consistency; proven.

I use the Lee factory crimp die.I get nice consistant crimps and case length isn't such a problem as it is with regular roll crimp dies.It will also enhance accuracy.Some drive Chevy some drive a Ford

RCBS also makes a three-die set that roll-crimps. You got the wrong set, unless you're reloading for a semi-auto.

IMNSLE the Redding Profile Crimp die is the finest crimping die for revolver-intended ammo.

I use LEE, Lyman, RCBS, Dillon, Hornady, and Redding dies.
