Post 64 Model 70 in .284 Win
Just picked a beauty up from a retired (74 yr old) Navy guy. He's too shaky and can't hit squat (his words).
It's a push feed, Featherweight Model originally chambered in 7x57 Mauser, but re-chambered to .284 Winchester, it's less than 1 MOA accurate and in great shape. No pics yet but soon |

"...Hope you're a reloader..." Even that might not help. Midway shows Winchester ammo and brass as Limited Production only. Grafs shows both PCI and Winchester as out of stock or unavailable. .284 Win brass isn't even listed by Grafs. None at OWS either.
Buffalo Arms shows Winchester brass as Temporarily Unavailable - Back-Orders OK(ditto for PCI loaded ammo). 75 cents each when you buy 100 pcs. Fair bit of brass for sale at reasonable prices(if you think $85 is reasonable for 60 cases), on Gunbroker. These guys claim to have brass. Don't look at their price of the Norma brass. You'll have a stroke. https://www.bullets.com/products/-28...-Count/BL11927 Don't want to accuse a retired Navy guy of anything, but Geezuz. Rumoured that it's not hard to re-form 6.5-284 Norma to .284 Win. Still pricey, but at least it's available. Hornady brass is currently on sale at Midway for $52.99 per 50.

I reloaded for it when he bought it several years ago, got dies, 200 brass, and trial and error on bullets, it prefers Sierra 145 Pro Hunters and
Reloader-19 for 7/8" @ 100 with 4 shots (full mag) @ 2900 fps. It's a sweet shooter and might even get better with more development. I'll hoard brass when they do those limited runs. "Navy guy" is disabled, which explains his abilities, but obviously a great guy. Did I mention he gave it to me !! Last edited by tahoe2; February 4, 2016 at 12:37 AM. |

I have a few M 70's and really like them. 284 is a very overlooked but effective cartridge. What action length is it?

I think it's an "06" length action, it was originally a 7x57 Mauser, and I don't think Winchester made an intermediate length action.
It has a jeweled bolt and a beautiful walnut stock with a Schnabel fore-end and Fluer-de-lis checkering. |

Sounds like a USRAC M70 Featherweight. If it is the 06 length you should be able to seat your bullets out a little further than factory specs. Take advantage of that case capacity. USRAC did actually introduce a short action for the M70.

I have 284 on long action and it's long throated.
There is some Norma 284 brass now and bullet.com has it and it's about same price as Laupa 6.5x284 brass. Berger manual even has loading data for SAAMI Spec 284. http://www.bullets.com/products/-284...-Count/BL11927
