S&W 14-3

My buddy inherited a blued 14-3 from his father. This is my only experience thus far with a revolver. Wow! What a fantastic gun to shoot.
One bi problem that should be an easy fix. When the cylinder is open the cylinder mount slides off toward the muzzle. I am sure that there should be a clip or some type of retainer. Can someone tell me what that retainer would be called? If you have a S&W parts source that would also be great.
Are these guns capable of handling +P rounds?

That piece is called a crane or a yoke, depending on who is involved in the conversation

and it is retained by a small screw on the right side of the revolver -- it is the most forward of all the screws on the right side of the revolver.

Sounds like if your cylinder yoke is sliding forward, you may be missing the yoke screw:

Or else it's just not tightened up enough.

Take a look on the right side of the gun just above the trigger. Is there an empty screw hole there? If so, you're missing your yoke screw.

As to the other question - your gun is a K-frame Smith and Wesson all-steel revolver, so yes, it can handle +P ammo.

As established, they can handle +P but they are phantastic with 148gr WC.

My model 14 is the most accurate center fire handgun I own. It likes everything you put in it.

I tried to get my buddy to part with it a few times but he is not budging. At least I get to shoot it when we go to the range. So far I have found it to be very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. Very limited recoil, it puts a hole wherever I point it.
