up to 300 yards, with out a doubt, 38-55. 40 65 starts wandering at 500 to 600. 45 70 good to 600 to 700. if your are a dedicated ammo crafter these ranges can be extended but be prepared to marry your reloading bench.
.....a couple of weeks ago there was some 38 55 bashing going on but it and some of the 32 40 type old time cartridges cleaned up in pope/stevens rifles in offhand target shooting at the turn of the century. bobn

At 100 yds the 40-65 versus the 45-70 is more a choice about recoil. If you do a lot of shooting then your shoulder might thank you for choosing 40-65.

If you're not trying to knock down heavy gong targets then 38-55 is a good one too.

Now you got me wanting all three, too bad Sharps rifles are so expensive.

Best for 100 yds ??????

A Sharps aint Even getting started at 100 yds........ a regular patched round ball is starting to peter out at 100 and it is lucky to be accurate at 150...
but a sharps rifle shoots a " conical " Boolit which is good for
a LOT more distance than 100 yds....considering you know how to shoot and have already developed a good load.
