In basic training at Ft. Ord in 1977 my issue weapon was marked XM16-E1.

And would occasionally fire two rounds for one pull of the trigger when on semi. Made qualifying extra challenging when you only get to engage 32 of 40 targets in a stage...

M-16 A1 Ft. Benning, GA. 1979.
Not to hi-jack the thread but one of the other posters mentioned the manufacturer and it reminded me when I was a unit armorer. Some of our M2 50 cal's were made by the AC Spark Plug division of General Motors. Our 4.2" mortars (M30 Cannon) were made by Whirlpool. Just a few that I can remember. I just thought it was funny.

Advanced Combat Optical Gunsights (abbreviated ACOG) are a series of telescopic sights manufactured by Trijicon. The ACOG was originally designed to be used on the M16 rifle and M4 carbine, but Trijicon have also developed ACOG accessories for other firearms.

Models provide fixed power magnification levels from 1.5× to 6×.[1] ACOG reticles are illuminated at night by an internal phosphor. Some versions have an additional daytime reticle illumination via a passive external fiber optic light pipe.

You must have been there a few months before I left for Korea late '90.

Blast from the Past

Springfield Model 1842 Musket. Issued in the field when we landed at the beachhead in Veracruz. That was March, 1847. It was one of those newfangled caplocks and I recall wanting to keep my simple flintlock!

At least that's the way I remember it...

M1 when I went thru basic in Ft Ord, 1963. First time I saw a M16 was for qualification prior to going to Nam in 67. Issued a 45 in Nam, but never fired it the entire year I was there.

Interesting reading about all the "worn out" M-16's in basic. I was a drill sergeant at Ft Leonard Wood in the mid 70's, and if you saw how they were treated cycle after cycle, you'd wonder how they could hit anything.

M16.....I don't remember which version. Ft. Benning, Ga....1984. After artillery school (Ft. Sill, OK) ....was issued an M4.

Hated them then.....and still do. Got my self yelled at by asking if I could have a bolt-action rifle instead.

M-14 at Fort Polk, LA in Sept. 1964. I thought it was an impressive infantry weapon but the ammo was heavy in quantity. I think those training centers went to M-16's the next year. Yea, I am older than dirt!
