Mounting red dot on Ruger mkIII 22/45

I have had the rail mounted on this ruger before and when i removed it (old red dot bit the dust) the rail left two very fine lines on the top of barrell,is there any thing i could put between the two surfaces to keep this from happening. The marks are from the edge of the acc rail. Thanks, and yes i did have the screws blue locktited.

I removed a "DOT" from my MK111 (stainless) the base was the one that came with the gun. There were some minor marks from the scope base, I used MOTHERS Mag & Aluminum polish to remove the marks. If yours is a blue gun maybe some blue touch-up and follow with FLITZ polish. I usually use some 600/800 grit sandpapper to clean the edges on the base, befor I mount it, to limit as much scoring as possible. I havn`t seen any type of "sheild" sold for a scope base, but i guess you could fashion one.
