Best All Around Rifle POLL

I'm leaning towards the 25-06, due to that fact that it has a bit more energy than others, but don't quite know yet.

Another one of these....oh my gosh. There have been a few, you might want to run a search.

308 Winchester!

It is more than capable of taking everything in North America given the right bullet and cricumstance, yes even bears.

im going for 308 based on personal experience and the fact thats its the most common and popular out of the selection. The most powerful and unique caliber rifled in the world isnt worth a dime unless you can get ammo for it in a pinch

What ?? No 223?? I know, its little and wimpy. But very accurate, making precise shots easy. Just wondering, since you listed 204 Ruger.

Of what's listed I went with .308
However
From my own personal experience I've found .30-30 and my favorite .243Win to have wide spread applicability.

I've shot easily 3x as many .243 rounds as any other rifle (discounting .22LR of course).

I voted 308. I try to stay within the OP's choices when it comes to these threads.

I know a lot of guys are going to say "WHERE IS THE OTT SIX AT" but the OP posted the cartridges he was interested in so I picked from them.

If he wants to know our favorite cartridge period I'm sure he will asked for our favorite.

yea hes missing a selection of our favorites - however these "best all around" rifles are dependent upon personal needs.

A varminter will choose a varmint round - unless do they long range varminting they might choose more of a big game round

A big game hunter will probably only start looking at .30 cals and maybe the 6.5's

It is not really fair to compared varmint with big game rounds either and also the costs/barrel life of each round comes into play however - if I had to pick one to be the best - I would definitely choose a magnum as their ballistics are superior. Whether or not that extra punch is needed is another thing.

When were talking about the best - there's best for different things.
I'd say the best varmint round for 0-250 yards is a .223
I'd say the best varmint round for 250-400 is a .22-250
Varmints from 400+ I'd up to a .243

Big game I'd start with a .308
Long range big game .300 win mag

This example show's that each have their own place - Anyhow if I had to choose one rifle for my "entire" life from that list - I'd have to choose the .308 as it has the most power and will kill the largest game as well as the smallest. Good thing we don't have to choose just one and we can have a few to satisfy our needs

Your poll is rather biased since you only had one cartridge that will shoot the heavier bullets. But I voted for the 308 since those other choices wouldn't really even be close to a all around cartidge.

Hum? Which cartridge on your list broke every accuracy record set in national match competition by the .30-06? Which is one of the finest all around cartridges ever developed? Which cartridge on your list is still the standard military and sniper round by which the rest are judged? The list goes on, but I'll cut to the chase.

.308 Winchester

Another one of these....oh my gosh.

Yes, "j.chappell", ANOTHER one of these.

Problem with this poll is he didn't even list a single rifle!!!

Makes it hard to vote for a rifle when everything listed is a CARTRIDGE.

Maybe on here words don't have CORRECT meanings and you can call anything you want by any name you want to call it?

"j.chappell", you really are expecting a lot if you want someone here to do a search. It is easier to let everyone else do the work for you and spoon feed it to you.

You think they will ever learn? What is best for me is best only for me and my needs NOT EVERYONE elses!!!

I'd say the only choice is the most powerful round. I have no doubt that there are rifles of every caliber listed that are capable of being as accurate as any of the others, especially since we're talking generalities not "at 1000 yards, or 100 yards"

BTW, is it just my imagination or are people being just a wee bit testy this evening?

Peet,

I have not been testy, I have not been rude. One of my posts was taken as being rude. I simply asked the question everyone had but didn’t. I was not rude in what I said but it was obvious by his backlash that he was offended.

If you look I deleted the PM that I posted in his thread as you stated it was in poor taste to post a PM.

I am a strong believer in saying what is on my mind and up front. If you have to duck around corners and attack in private then I have no respect for you. If I am wrong I will admit it, if I have offended I will apologize.

Peet,

I have not been testy...

Actually, in this instance I was referring to "73-captain" but , I suppose, the recent activity in the other thread may have contributed to my observation.

The poll says "Best all around rifle" yet there's a bunch of cartridges in that list and not one single rifle.

I was expecting to see something like

Semi-auto carbine
Bolt action rifle
lever action rifle
multi-barreled rifle

From what is there to choose from, I would go with .308. My personal choice for the "best cartridge/if you could only have one rifle" debates would hands down be .270 Win.

Out of this group

I would say the .308 cartridge in almost any platform from single shot, semi-auto, bolt, or whatever.

Looks like both of your entire posts in that thread are completely gone. How did you do that?

I didnt do it, lol. I guess it was found offensive by someone and they were all deleted. If the staff thinks I was wrong in any way I wish that they would address me on it.

.308 baby!

Powerful, accurate and plentiful. And if you look in the right place affordable-----in HUGE numbers!

Whoa the staff.......I've seen this sort of thing before. Sometimes it takes a while to complete their inquiry and issue a finding.
