6.8 SPC buffer question.

I don't really see it mentioned, and I have been wondering.

Do you need a different/heavier buffer for 6.8?

I am running an H2 right now, and was wondering if I got an upper if I would need a new buffer.

I don't really know but EVERY time I've ask if there needs to be a different buffer or spring when making a caliber change . I was told no even when using those big single stack calibers . So I'm going to say no but the fact I just put that in writing means I'm wrong once again

I installed a 20" 6.8 barrel on an older Colt AR15A2 Competition HBAR. The only other items I needed to swap were the bolt and magazine. The rifle functions flawlessly with the stock 5.56 rifle buffer.

OK then... My H2 should work then.

Now to wait until PSA has a 18" barrel upper on sale.

If your gas system wasn't setup quite right, you can use buffer weight to fine tune it. If you see swipes without flat primers and/or you are ejecting toward the front of the gun, it's overgassed and a heavier buffer might help. If it's ejecting behind you, you may need a lighter buffer.

Yeah... I was concerned the larger round would have timing issues without more buffer.

I can tune if I need.

My 6.8 with a 16 inch barrel and CAR stock beat the carbine buffer up so badly that the plastic part flattened out and would not slide in the tube. It only took a couple of thousand rounds to do it but it did. I replaced with a heavier carbine buffer and I do not see any damage so far. The ejection was still at 4-5 o'clock but the buffer was being hammered pretty badly.

Hodaka, what length gas system do you have and do you know what size the port is?

You might also have a weak spring.

The gas tube is 9". I have no idea of the port diameter but mine is one of the earlier 6.8's and I'm pretty sure it is whatever is stock for a 5.56 CAR. It is a JT distributing upper. It has been working fine since i put in the heaviest buffer I could find.

Standard buffer is recommended. If you regularly maintain your rifle, you will see any signs of wear/damage early and be able to correct it accordingly.
