30-06 Oal

As i said in an earlier post, my 30-06 is getting poor groups. I am using match 168gr sierra hollowpoint btsp. i have a hornady reloading manual and i have been using the hornady info with the sierra bullets. the oal in the book is 3.280 my question is that can i seat the bullet further in the cartridge without causeing problems? and if i can how far can i seat it back in the case. From what i understand OAL has a big affect on accuracy. since i am using the info for hornady bullets on the sierra bullets will that create a problem since the info is not exactly for the sierra bullets.

Brand and model of rifle?

How old is it?

Action type?

Barrel length?

For accuracy you may want to slow it down and try again.

Yes, it is possible that Hornaday's loads are better for their bullets than for someone else's... It is also possible that the difference could be negligible.

If it won't eat one bullet type, brand or weight... try another.

You may also find that a heavier bullet will work better with that caliber...180?

Accuracy always seemed to be better for me if I used a minumum of freebore... Therefore, I'm not so sure deeper seating will do the trick... I've never tried it.

Make all adjustments very small...

Check
The crown
The rifling
The throat

It may be that used up...

The barrel length is important to the loading info...
Look to see the barrel length that was used to work up the recommended loads in the book.
