What shotgun is he holding in photo?
In this rather famous photo of the the Blank Panther Huey P. Newton, he is holding a shotgun-maybe a Mossberg 500? Persuader? The link is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Panther_Party
The photo is about halfway down the page. We want to include one in a museum exhibit and I need some help identifying it. Thanks! |

Looks more like a Remington 870. Note the oval ejection port.

Anyone's guess is as good as another because of the general lack of detail. We can rule out any of the bottom electors because there's a side port visible. Scorch sees a lot more in the port than I do. I think I can see something going on in the front portion of the trigger guard, so that rules out a Mossberg. IINM, with the 870, the barrel clamp is a few inches back from the muzzle and we'd see the mag extension coupling. By the shape of the corn cob, trigger guard, barrel clamp, and date, I'm gonna hazard a wild guess that we're seeing a Winchester 1200 Defender or a High Standard FlightKing, Riot. If a "V" profile (or lack of) at the back of the receiver could be seen, we know a little more.

My 2 cents is that this is a early High Standard 12 gauge Riot gun. Notice the mag tube is full length and seems to be attached to a barrel mount at the muzzle. Google High Standard riot guns and take a look.

Bob, my friend, if we could see just a little more detail of the muzzle we'd know if it a HS, or not. For now, it's the blind leading the blind.

Thanks TheKlawMan, in the pic you found we can count the grooves/rings in the fore-wood. The gun in question has 14, IINM, High Standards had 14 and the 1200 had 12.

Welcome. I thought the rings may be a clue.

I liked the part in Forrest Gump where Forrest says “I'm sorry I had to fight in the middle of your Black Panther party.” That was funny.

Thank you all! How rare is the High Standard?
Thank you all very much! Our museum exhibit is called "1968" A lot of stuff happened in 1968 including the forming of the Black Panthers. Is the High Standard Riot gun pretty rare?
