Need recipe for Speer GDHP 135 gr

Hi. I just found you guys. This looks like a great forum. I used to reload alot mainly for revolvers but stopped for many years. I just got everything set back up and bought some dies, primers and Bullseye powder to get started again. I was looking for some HBWC in 38 SPL but could not find them so I got something else.

I picked up some Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel Personal PROTECTION bullets in 38 SPL (.357") 135 GR GDHP. Box is marked Speer 4014. I know these are good bullets but I can't find a load recipe anywhere for them. I would like to load them mainly for target practice since I prefer factory load personal defense carry load ammo. Does anyone have load data for these in 38 special or 38 SPL +P preferrably using Bullseye? Bulls eye is the only powder I have right now. Thanks for the help.

I plan to start loading 38 SP, .357 again and eventuall 9MM, 40 S&W and 30/30 rifle.

unfortunately Speer doesnt have data on their web-site, sometimes they have supplemental data, but not currently. So you may have to get the most current Speer manual, it should have data for that specific bullet. You could also call Speer, they might give you/fax the data...

6.4 grains of Power Pistol; CCI 500 Primer; 1.45" COAL = 1,065 FPS
5.2 grains of Unique; CCI 500 Primer; 1.45" COAL = 988 FPS

Both from the Alliant Powders website. (All their load data is for Speer Bullets)
[ Note: Both are Maximum loads and Alliant recommends syarting with 10% less powder and working up from there. ]

Sorry, nothing I see for Bullseye.

Speer reloading manual, 14th ed:

Power Pistol: 6.0 to 6.4
AA No. 5: 6.6 to 7.0
AA No. 7: 7.8 to 8.2
HS-6: 6.8 to 7.2
Viht. 3N37: 6.0 to 6.4
Unique: 4.8 to 5.2
Hod. Universal: 5.0 to 5.2
IMR PB: DNR* to 4.7

*DNR= do not reduce

COL Tested: 1.450"
Primer: CCI 500

Also, these loads were listed under the 38 Special +P section, not the regular 38 Special section.

Sorry, but nothing listed for Bullseye

Thanks so much. I'll go get another powder. Looks like Unique or Universal may be a good one to have on hand. Thanks again.

Charge data you want

Speer seems to have gotten rather silly about load data for the .38 Special. They don't list ANY loads for 158 grain jacketed bullets in their latest manual. Very strange.

Anyway, from their latest (#14) manual, they do list Bullseye for their 140 grain UCHP bullet in .38 +P. Page 731 of that manual says that UC bullets typically use the same load data as GD bullets of the same weight. (They have the same basic construction, except for the nose, which is formed by a simpler and thus cheaper process.)

SO, it seems that a load for a 140 grain UCHP should be safe enough for a slightly lighter 135 grain GDHP. Comparisons of the charge weights for other powders between the 135 gr GDHP and the 140 gr UCHP show very similar charge weights. They aren't identical. The 135 gr bullet charges are typically a few tenths of a grain higher, but, for one powder, (AA #7), the max is actually 0.1 grain lower. If you start where you should and work up to the 140 gr bullet's max charge, you should be fine in any gun that is OK for +P ammo.

The Bullseye charges for +P .38 Special with the 140 gr UCHP are:
start: 4.0 gr for 828 fps
max 4.6 gr for 924 fps.

The velocities came from a S&W Model 14 with a 6" barrel.

I will mention that Speer's older manuals listed even higher Bullseye loads for their old "cup and core" type 140 grain bullets. They also listed charges for Bullseye all the way up to 158 and 160 grain bullets in both Standard and +P loads for the .38 Special. I have shot some of those loads without any problems, but it was in a .357 Magnum revolver.
