Tumbler media
I saw a question which has so far gone unanswered on another website. Here it is:
Is the corncob or walnut media sold by pet supply stores (such as Petsmart) ok for use in tumblers? Apparently it's much cheaper, but is it as pure as the stuff you can get from Dillon's, Midway, etc? Check Six |

I checked out a bag of pet type corn cob at wal mart. It is MUCH bigger that standard media, and there was even pieces of corn in the bag. Lots of dust, too. Didn't buy it. Don't know about the walnut though. Hope that helped.

I currently used pet store corn cob as my tumbling media. Very cheap.......actually very, very cheap. Add a little polish and the cases come out bright, shiny and clean. I'll never go back to using the "other" media

I'm on my first bag of pet store walnut. It's very small, about 1/16", and doesn't seem to produce any dust. At $2.50 for 5 lbs, I'm not complaining. Ask me again in a month or so.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
I occasionally clean cases; I use corn only. I ALWAYS add Dillon Rapid Polish.

I bought a bag of the corn cob media at Wally world. The media is bigger but I don't have has many caught in the flash hole as with conventional media. No problems with dust. I do add Midway polish and everything comes out bright and shiny. After using it for a couple months I am satsified with it, especially the price compared to the name brands. The one bag will last a long long time.

Pet Shop Tumbler Media
I have bought media at gunshows. It seems to be the pet store stuff. I need a source for buying bulk the rouge powder they use for cleaning cases.

Cheapest source of corn cob tumbling media is an abrasives supply shop.
I like to add a little non-ammoniated car polish to the cob--seems to promote cleaner cases. |

I think I paid roughly $15 for a 50lb. bag of walnut media from a "country" type store that sold alot of feed and farm related stuff. Works great.

I once tried the pet store stuff. Dumped it and about 200 .30 carbine cases in the tumbler. Stuff was so big it wouldn't seperate out using a modified kitchen collander that works fine with the smaller media but what was worse was that it would't dump out of the cases either! Had to use a wire to clean out each & every case. Never tried it again.

$15 for a 50lb. bag of walnut media?
I think I could afford to pay $15 for a 50lb. bag of walnut media. The media might have to be changed out considerbablly more often, the price offsets the usability.

Pet store corn cob is just fine.
Don't deprime before tumbling. Use a non-ammonia car polish. I use turtle wax. If dust disturbs your sensibilities, pour fresh media in the tumbler, add 3 glubs of car wax and tumble for 30 minutes. No dust! then add your dirty brass.

Avoid the pet stores. i was just looking at my receipts.
I paid $5.97 for a big bag of corn cob media from petsmart and I paid $2.97 for the same sized bag at WalMart. Go to Walmart and get it half priced. Or find a local feed store and get it there.

Large corn cob media can easily be reduced in size in a electric food processor. Two things however....... don't over do it and don't let your wife catch you doing it. QUADCAB

Thanks for the replies
My tumbler showed up yesterday and I'm off to Wal Mart tonight to pick up media and polish. I checked the prices at the local PetSmart, but I can't remember off hand what they were. I'm moving in a few months anyway, and I can think of a lot more valuable things to bring along with me than some walnut media, so I think I'll try the small bag first.
