Ed Brown Extractors
I am needing a 10mm/40 extractor for my DE. Do Ed Browns extractors come tuned, or do I have to tune them?

Hey Dust Monkey,
Slight variances in slide manufacture, firing pin stop slot, extractor port location etc. make it pretty well impossible to 'pre-tune' a 1911 extractor. It's just one of those parts you fit to an individual gun. Accomplishing this for one on 45 cal is no big deal and tutorials are not hard to find. They are generally based on setting the tension to hold a standard, 230 ball round against the breechface (done with the slide OFF the gun) and to release it when a specific weight of downward pressure is exerted against that round. Where I can't help you at all however, is what the protocols for the 10/40 extractors are. While I would expect them to be similar, I wouldn't pretend for a moment that they are interchangeable. My suggestion would be to call one of the outfits that offers complete guns in those calibers, which also use a conventional extractor. I'd call and ask, real nice, for their service department and for whatever assembly tech tensions their extractors. I've had pretty good luck getting info from such folks in the past. One thing I can tell you without reservation is that Brown sells a good extractor. I run them in all my 1911's and also I've put them in several I ironed out for other cops. Every one of them has kept chugging right along.

Thanks for the info. My DE was a jamomatic today. I am going to test it out again tomorrow. I was shooting reeds 200gr range ammo, I had installed a comonilli frame saver guide rod. I gave me all sorts of jams. I am replacing that guide rod with eitherba full length or regular GI set up with a 20lb spring. So hopefully that will cure it, I also just replaced my mag springs with wolf extra power springs. So fingers crossed, maybe I do not need a new extractor, bit ordered one anyway from Browns along with the hardcore FP stop.
With the current extractor, slide off, it will hold a round in place, not a problem there. Thanks again

The difference between the 40/10mm extractor and the 45acp extractor will be in the pad and the knuckle on the extractor.
The pad and knuckle on the 40/10mm extractor is cut to allow the extractor hook to move closer to the center of the breech face. This will allow the claw to grab more of the smaller rim on the 40/10mm case. Regards Bob Hunter www.huntercustoms.com |
