Need Advice on Wall Mounts

How does one clean deer wall mounts without destroying them?? And is there anyway to repair them once they start splitting?

I try to clean mine monthly with a spray bottle of water. Lightly spary the mount and use a clean paper towel to wiping in the direction of the hair. I've had two taxidermists recommend this method and it seems to keep them pretty clean.

If it's dust that is bothering you, pick up one of those electrostatic duster doohickeys and gently sweep the mount along the grain of the fur. It works for me, anyway.

Vacuum the dust from hide and hair, wipe eyes/horns/antlers down with a mild soap & water. If insects (moths) are a problem, better get some Protex from Van Dykes.

If they begin splitting, a quality taxidermist can repair it.

Protex Mount Care
$59.49
Item no: 01319078

1 Gallon

Protex Mount Care protects hair, fur and feathers from moth and insect damage. Not only is it safe and easy to use, but it won't wash out either. It can be used for new mounts or existing ones. Wipe the product onto the hair or add it to the sawdust in a fur drum. Protex Mount Care is not water-soluble.

The guy who did it was an old family friend who always did incredible work for decent prices. He died a while back but his work lives on.

Still at the taxidermist - calling him tomorrow to see if he ever got the Boone and Crockett guy over there to score it for me. Hopefully when I get that score in, then within the next couple of weeks, there will be an article in the Omaha World Herald -Sports section. Dad talked me into submitting my pictures to a section called the scoreboard - the guy that does the section said he wasn't going to put me on it. He wants to do an article about the deer, where I shot it, ect. ect.
