Luger and Mauser Broomhandle,,,

Luger and Mauser Broomhandle,,,
They have become too expensive for me.

Actually I probably could afford to buy the guns,,,
But I won't spend that much for guns I wouldn't shoot very much.

I'm still kicking my rear end,,,
For letting a shooter grade (ugly but functional) Luger get away,,,
The old gentleman didn't want his kids to get it so he offered it to me for $500.00.

That was with a original (maybe) holster,,,
And two functioning magazines.

I really don't have a strong urge to own either one,,,
I just would like to be able to shoot one every now and then.

So, it's a good thing I have lots of gun friends with lots of guns,,,
Whenever we go to the range together I can always say,,,
Hey, bring that (whatever I'm thinking about) along.

Aarond

That's a decent deal for a shooter, Aarond. I think the going price is more like $600-700 these days. Make sure it's a 9mm, of course, unless you reload 7.65. I recently pickup up a shooter Luger and haven't had a chance to try it yet.

There are a lot of guns I can't afford, too. A bunch I could buy but won't because I can't justify the expense.

Good thing there's a buttload of guns in the world I can afford...

Do what one of my friends did, and buy a Lahti. People will think it's a Luger, and then become even MORE fascinated when they realize it isn't one.

Friends who bring guns for you to shoot are real pals.
Even better if they supply the ammo, too.
Nowhere as good as friends with boats, though.
Do they make you clean them afterwards?
Real pals take them home dirty.

We clean our own guns,,,

I'll supply a mag of ammo,,,
But if I shoot someone else's gun,,,
I feel it's my responsibility to use my ammo.

Since they are usually shooting one of mine as well,,,
I feel no need to clean their guns for them,,,
After all, I don't make them clean mine.

I have a much larger selection of .22 handguns than my friends do,,,
And I have a 6" S&W model 629 that they like to shoot,,,
As scarce as .22 ammo is I can't front ammunition,,,
At close to a buck a round same for the .44 Mag.

It's all very egalitarian between us,,,
So no one ever walks away feeling they were "had".

An IDPA-shooting buddy and I have a Luger grudge match every year. I'd probably never shoot the thing, otherwise. Handloading .30 is a real pain, I don't like doing it, and less enjoy losing 25% of the cases after I've lavished all that attention on them. Still, fun times.

The fame of Georg Luger's pistol was so great that there have been many imitations and copies. One, years ago, was the "Kruger", a plastic toy pistol that could actually fire a #7 shot using a toy cap. The ads were couched in terms that made the scaled-down gun sound like a real pistol. Shortly after, another pistol came on the market, shaped, like the Kruger, to resemble the famous German handgun. Once bitten, few shooters were interested in another fraudulent attempt to capitalize on the famous name. The nature of the scam was made even more obvious by the use of an obviously fake name that sounded like the original - Ruger.

Funny - after we got our Luger, I had to keep telling my wife... "Sweetheart, it's a LUGER, not a RUGER".

Luger

Aarond: When we can get together to shoot, I'll bring my Luger too. You have some .22's I'd like to try out.

This might take a while...here's mine...

1936 military contract P.08

Mauser Bolo, 9mm Luger

Also have a pair of Stoeger .22 Lugers, and a Stoeger P.08 9mm stainless steel (sorry, no pic of that one yet).

what do you think?

Nice 44 AMP, that Broomhandle looks brand new and those Lugers aren't far from it.

Luger threads make me sad. My grandfather had a 1917(?) DWM artillery model that his brother had supposedly taken off a German Officer during WWII. I was supposed to get it when he died, but another family member ended up with it.

Back in the late 80's to early 90's I went to a bunch of gun shows, seems Lugers and Broomhandles were fairly common. Not so much anymore.

While I get that you were making a joke, the Ruger .22 semi-autos always reminded me more of a Type 14 Nambu than a Luger though the Ruger guns are obviously of much better quality than a Type 14.

Wanted a Luger my whole life. My Grandfather brought one home from WW2 that was stolen when his house was broken into before my time. Now the price is much too high, especially when there are guns in the same cal. for a quarter of their cost that perform as well and carry twice as many rounds, but I still have to say they never filled that empty pocket though.

I won't shoot a Broomhandle anymore. I lust after one, but I've seen one too many with cracked or even fractured bolts to be comfortable shooting one. Although unlikely, it is possible that a fractured bolt could cough out the back of the gun and right into the shooter's face.

I was lucky to be into guns when all the Combloc stuff was coming over as surplus in the early and mid 90's. I was able to get a re-arsenalled Luger that came in from either East Germany or Russia. It retained all Nazi markings, and the only thing they did it seems was to re-blue it. It shoots great, and in all these years it has never had a failure with any ammo I've used including my reloads, flat points, hollow points, whatever. It is very accurate also.

I also have a C-96 Broomhandle that was refurbished by a guy many years ago. I don't shoot that. It looks much like 44amps, but with the standard, longer barrel as it is not a Bolo, but it is a "Red Nine" chambered in 9MM Luger.

Sorry no pics.

Some guns just seem to deserve nicknames. I call my broomhandle Han. Han Bolo.

And while I don't think a little scope is in order, one of the flash hiders like in the movie would be cool!

Its an older pic, today Han wears a set of Red 9 grips. Took me a while to find a set made for the Bolo. Not only is the Bolo barrel shorter than standard, so is the grip frame, by just enough so regular grips don't fit.

I don't shoot it much, but not because I'm worried about the locking block (all parts appear mechanically perfect), but because without the stock, its the most uncomfortable 9mm I have ever shot!

The Chinese made broomhandles in .45 auto. A guy had one at the range, and I seriously wanted it.

My dad gave me the Luger he brought back from WWII. It is all matching and has the capture papers. I bought a shooter so I don't have to risk breaking something on my dad's.

They are fun to shoot, very different feel and surprisingly accurate with the crude sights. My birthday present to myself every year is to take the day off work and take the Luger to the range.

As far as guns I lust after but will never own:
- Desert Eagle (.357 mag)
- Coonan (.357 mag)
- Sharps 45-120 (Quigley down under)
