Ok keep this quiet ... Cmp is selling m1 carbines again
Struggling to post this and draw attention to it... :-). Got an email today from cmp, on Monday they will begin to take orders for a limited amount of m1 carbines.
M1 Carbine Service Grade: R017SERVICE $685/each Free S&H Carbines may have been rebuilt and refinished at least once and will exhibit, in most cases, varying degrees of wear on many parts and generally nosignificant pitting on metal. Metal parts are mixed USGI. While all Carbines are USGI, some may have foreign markings. Muzzle may gauge 3 or less on muzzle gauge. Stocks may be replacement marked M2 type birch, beech pot belly or USGI walnut, but may have seen heavy use with possible rebuild or other markings. Each carbine will be shipped with an empty chamber indicator, CMP Safety Manual and a CMP reprint of FM23-37. The Carbine is also shipped in a CMP hard rifle case. I would say that the prospect of most anticipated limited number guns the CMP releases in the next few years will be largely snapped up by those who check their mailbox and already have their credentials on file.
I don't believe announcing it on a forum is going to make much difference. Like some tactical EDC makers, the CMP has it's market defined and ready to buy as soon as they know of the availability. I do note these carbines regardless of grade may show foreign markings, which is an indication they were returned to the US some time in the past. It will be interesting to see which ones and how long ago these were in other countries. First come, time stamped by date, the daily basket of purchases then processed, no choices on maker, you get what you get. These aren't high grade auction guns or inherently rare. |

When I went to the cmp site I found
NOTE: CMP'S Carbine Inventory has been exhausted and we do not expect to receive any additional shipments. Due to limited quantities we may come across, M1 Carbines, M1Carbine barreled Receivers, Bavaria-Marked M1 Carbines and M1A1 Paratrooper Carbines will be offered on the CMP Auction Site. There were 7 S'G' carbines (Field and Service grade mix) on the aution block. Anyone have a link to this new batch?

I went to buy my M1 Garand a few years ago, and in an hour some guy bought every one they had, probably a dealer.

M1 carbine is not an interest to me so I'm good. There has been a lot of discussion as a means of discouraging the CMP "flippers". I got the same email on regards to the 1 per year per customer structure and I applaud that effort. Lots of heated discussion about the future sales of the 1911's. The CMP has commented the starting price of a " rack" grade 1911 will be $1k. That's way too steep for a guy like me who buys weekly shooters, but this price point will still appeal to the collector purists and hopefully keep the "flippers" out of the equation.

I am happy there is another opportunity for an individual to become an owner of US military history and more income for future CMP marksmanship offerings. Many think increased cost of the rifles is prohibitive but I see that as more longevity to CMP as a whole, I am very happy they limited this sale to one rifle per year although the Gunbroker listings will suffer as a result

I got the email from them, but even as early as Thursday they had this note on the M1 Carbine page. Wonder if your browser was showing an older cached version of the page? Quote:

I got my order in on Friday for an expected delivery to CMP on Monday the first. I don't remember CMP having carbines for sale for a good number of years. From the looks of the numbers of posts on the CMP forums site, these carbines are going to go real quick.
My experience with CMP for Garand purchases has been that they typically exceed expectations. I'm hoping the same holds true with the carbines. I expect a few rare gems to go out with this batch to a few lucky winners. |

If I didn't already have a nice one, I'd make an order. Mine's an Inland made in 1-44. Good shooter.

Back when the CMP were selling them for 400 some odd, I procrastinated. Then dI think he is credited with 193 confirmed kills.
Decided I really needed one to honor my father who used on in the SP in WWII and Korea (he liked it over the Garand, said it was better in the Jungle. Anyway I was set to attend the Master Instructor Course at Perry in Sept and figured I'd pick on up at the North Store. For some odd reason I got to thinking about it and sent in the order in June. Got an excellent Underwood. Glad I did, come Sept they were sold out. I've been shooting mine in the Carbine matches in the CMP games every since. Fine, accurate little rifle. I'll leave the current Carbines for those who don't have one. I highly recommend getting one, you'll not regret it. The prices wont go down. Same with the 1911s, not sure I will get on, I have a nice original USGI 1911a1, and will wait and see, if the demand is there, I'll give others the first chance, if demand is lacking I'll get one. You're buying history, as well as shooters. Get one, shoot them in the CMP games, you'll enjoy it.

One of my happiest memories is the day I drove the 45min to North Store, and picked out my Inland. What a great shooter! Mine has a six digit serial and a Rockola I-cut stock.
That carbine match at Camp Perry sounds like fun.

My first came from the DCM in 1963, a like new Inland with a duplicate S/N with Winchester so A -X suffex I doubt it got issued being made at the end of the war. I used it in the trunk of my patrol car for years, my friend a Col. Provost Marshal In the AF borrowed it and when it was returned it had two cans of ammo with it and a funny little switch on the left side. I used it for L E training classes for a year or so shooting those two cans of ammo and several more then "lost" all of the extra parts returning it to normal. About a hundred Carbines have passed through the collection since then and many still remain, I hope the new issue from CMP end up in the hands of shooters who have not had the good fortune to own one before and not to the Gunbroker resale crowd.

M1 CARBINE
I put my order in the mail on Friday. Got a Service Grade 43' Saginaw SG from CMP a few years ago and it is a great shooter. Way better than I thought it would be. No marks on the stock from where ever it was.
Ordered another because I want one for my grandson. Also ordered another M1 Garand hoping for a more original stock and looking more vintage. The last one I got, a 54' H&R is like new with the Walnut CMP stock and has a pristine finish and low wear on all the metal parts. CMP has not disappointed me with any of the rifles or ammo I have gotten from them. Hope I get the carbine. |

are these available to the general public??? I think you used to be required to be on a rifle team, or be in the civilian marksmanship program.

The main requirements are us citizenship and membership in a CMP afffiliated gun club. I sent in paper work to prove the 1st only to get hit with the second. I found dues in anther club membership just to buy was more money than simply purchasing from an ebay flipper. I wanted an olympic front sight.
It is a pain, this is not a program for citizens, it is only for insiders and profiteers. I am not a big fan. NRA membership is no help either. I thought they were involved at one point. |

Well, if it's too much for you, great...more for those of us who are willing to jump through the hoops.
I did to buy my carbine, for about $475. A year or two later, they had carbine mags in 10 pks, cheap. Then, they had carbine bayonets. Frankly, cmp does not exist as a retail entity in order for you to buy things cheap and easy. It exists to fund the shooting programs it sponsors.

A little work to complete the requirements will get you a certified M1 Garand for at least $300 to $500 cheaper than you will be able to buy one anywhere else. I've actually seen guys on Gunbroker paying 2 to 3 times the price for a poorer quality gun than the ones CMP certifies, and guarantees. Plus CMP rates their guns, and tells you exactly what the muzzle and throat erosion numbers are. You rarely get this with a private seller. Of course if you would rather pay $500 more to not have to do the paperwork, then that is an option. Last edited by Ernest T; February 1, 2016 at 05:47 PM. |

I do enjoy shooting the M1 carbine. Like Kraig I bought back when they were in the $400 range. Only I bought 5 ... 1 for my son and each grandson. They are a nice piece of history. They were still being used for qualifications in the 1960s in the USAF at Lackland. Were used for riot control duty in 1967 at the USAF base I was stationed at. I will stay out this time and let those that missed out previuosly to grab one this round. Good luck.

Qualifying did seem like work, from the outside looking in.
However, when the carbines were to be sold the last time, I started looking into it more seriously. When I started seeing pics of carbines people were getting, I really moved on it. My rifle club is CMP-affiliated, so it was just a matter of gathering the paperwork and filling out a form. Sold an Uzi to fund the purchase. When we went, there was a rack of about 40 carbines to choose from at North Store. I almost went for an IBM, but this six digit Inland in an I-cut stock called to me.
