Help Quick Please - 30-30 and imr 3031
how many grains of imr3031 does it take to fill up a 30-30 case?
I'm trying to load some 100 grain short jacket speer plinker. A load I found on MD Smith's reloading pages calls for 38 grains of imr 3031 but 38 grains fills the case up to the top but the formula doesn't mention a compressed load. This is my first try at reloading on my own equipment. It's a hornady balance scale. Thanks Jim |

I got 41.5grs of 3031 into the case WITH-OUT tapping the sides to help settle the powder. My older Hornady book lists 35.3 grs max for 3031 and a short jacket 100gr bullet. Scale used was a Lyman 1,000

I've had the best results using Win 748 in a 30-30.

Jim, tried to reply to your e-mail, but with my inter-net skills thought it wise to answer here also.
The Hornady manual is the 3rd edition, published in 1982. It shows an O.A.L. of 2.435" for Hornady's 100gr short jacket lead round-nose bullet. As a safety reminder the 35.3grs of IMR-3031,was a "MAX LOAD", and should be reduced by the customary 10%, and worked-up from there. Good Luck.

3031 and 3030's
In 30-30 I don't have a lot of luck with light bullets and 3031. IMR 4064 @ 35gr has worked really well for me in the past with that bullet. 3031 is a good powder for 30-30 and heavier bullets.
