Winchester White Box or Federal American Eagle .223?
I picked up a Burris C4 scope this week, and they'll give me a free custom elevation turret, but I need to tell them the load I plan to shoot.
I have an AR15 with a 5.56 SS 16" bull barrel with a 1-8 twist. I do reload, but I'm just banging away at coyotes out behind my place. I'd just as soon keep the ammo cheap, easy, and consistent. I know that WWB and American Eagle aren't exactly 500 yard bullseye ammo, but of the two, which would you pick? |

Of those 2 I'd probably go with the American Eagle .223. It's usually cheaper than the WWB, at least in my area.
I'm assuming you are referring to the black box labeled AE223. I like the black box labeled AR556 better. It's loaded a bit hotter. |

I have used .223 rifles to shoot coyotes many, many times, and if I was shooting at coyotes with a .223, I would use neither of your choices. An expanding round would be far more effective and humane, particularly at any real distance. For a few dollars more, you can get soft points if cheap is your thing:

I've shot some of that stuff from AIM, and I like it, but since the scope will be specifically set up for a specific load, I need to be sure I can reliably replenished stocks.
I'm only going with the cheaper stuff, because in my experience a guy is better off spending a lot of time shooting than spending a lot of money on some of the expensive target stuff, but not shooting as much. If I can reliably find soft point American Eagle, or WWB, I'd probably favor that. It seems that the more frangible HP bullets just don't hold up on velocity and power like the slightly heavier FMJ or SP ammo does. |

I do not think that you will find American Eagle or Winchester White Box in anything but FMJ or other non-expanding projectile because both of those product lines are purely for punching paper and target practice. Good luck in your search.

Not sure about 300. Never took a coyote that far.

Whichever you find the cheapest-as has been mentioned, they're both FMJ.

I like HPR 60 grain V-max ammo. I used to be able to find it for 70 cents a round plus my employee discount. Never shot a coyote, but the ammo works well on small hogs.

"Federal American Eagle 223 Remington Ammo 50 Grain Tipped Varmint AE223GTV"
That one plus Federal 50grain JHP and Fiocchi 50 V-Max are all excellent performers that kill varmints well. All have shown above average accuracy in multiple AR type rifles/carbines and a couple of Howa bolt actions. Those are what we use and we're not out there to fail. |
