vz24 conversion

I would like to convert a mauser vz24
I was hoping to re-barrel with 30-06 but see that they are too long for the magazine.
What cartridge, readily available with a range of bullet sizes will feed properly without magazine alterations

The VZ-24, or any standard length 98 Mauser action, can be reworked to .30-'06 by grinding out some on the ends of the magazine box and feed ramp. It was done to hundreds of thousands of WWII "bringback" Mausers with no problems. It does limit the rifle in that long seated bullets cannot be used, but standard (SAAMI spec) length rounds will work OK.

A small amount of work on the cartridge guides on the bottom of the rails might be needed, but that is no problem.

308
I have rebarreled many Mausers into 308 (several were VZ24s )

Wilson makes a very good barrel
short chambered, 1/10 twist, 24" length
available from Brownells

The VZ24 will take a '06 with a little grinding and filing. It's not that difficult.

Conversion to .308 is a lot easier, but that is not what Rich asked.

Getting 30-06 to feed from a VZ24 is a small task compared to welding the bolt and drilling and tapping the receiver, provided one buys an after market magazine box.

i have milled out magazine boxes, and I have bought them, and buying is better.

To me, Mauser sporterizing is clear in the Walsh book with specific dimensions to change the magazine box and feed lips, it is scatter brained in the Kuhnhausen book. I have been sporterizing Mausers for 47 years and will do another one in a week.
