For what rifle? What weight bullet? Cast or Jacketed?
For this caliber it is particularly important to know which rifle. I believe it likely you are comparing these two cartridges in the Marlin 1895, but not positive.
For the Marlin 1895 and cast bullets, I'd look on the Cast Boolits website. Some other sites for the .45-70: http://www.leverguns.com/articles/marlin_4570.htm http://www.chuckhawks.com/45-70Govt.htm http://www.realguns.com/loads/4570.htm http://stevespages.com/458_1_300.html I have no experience with the "Fo-Fo-Fo". |

The flex tip bullets for tube magazines are indeed in their catalog and available for purchase where you can find them in stock, but ... if you think Hornady offers to the general public the information on the charge weights and types of powder they put in their loaded ammunition ... I think you will be very disappointed.
Ammunition producers often use powders not available off the shelf to you and I. That is, after all, one way they hope to produce ammunition that is, at least potentially, superior to what we can reload at home. Hornady has been at the front of the pack for some time now when it comes to top velocities and their very successful "Lite" and "Heavy" magnums loads are currently being replaced with a new line that offers more of the same. You may be able to approximate their results the old fashined way, trial and error, working up with an assortment of different powders, etc., but I doubt if you'll get lucky enough to be provided any magic shortcuts here. |

Call Hornady, if they are making components they will give you load data for said components. It's when they aren't selling the components seperately is when they won't give you specifics. They have load data for the Leverevolution. Here is the FTX load data from their site http://www.hornady.com/support/downloads/load-data

That is indeed load data for the flex tip bullets... so which one is the one that Hornady uses for their factory loading?
Maybe, I misunderstood the question, I thought the man wanted to duplicate the factory load. By the way mconfluence, I don't really understand what the big deal is about the flex tip bullets for this application anyway. What do you hope to gain, from your 45-70 and 444, by their use? Do you wish to turn a couple of fast handling, quick repeating, short range powerhouses into long range snipers? Hornady has made a great 265 gr. flat sp since the beginning of the 444 and there is a wealth of similar bullets in a variety of weights for the 45-70. Leverguns and flatpoints really shine at modest ranges where you can really even forego a scope (with young eyes). The longer ranges that call for precise guns with sleek pointy bullets and big scopes are for bolt guns in my opinion. Just my 2 cents I'm not trying to flame you... hope I don't offend anyone else either. Last edited by oldscot3; January 5, 2010 at 08:35 PM. |
