Question about 6XC freebore.

Hi Guys,
I'm having a rifle built and will chambered in 6XC. I haven't had the conversation with the smith yet, but what I'm reading says that the idea is to tighten up freebore with the goal of getting lands contact while the round is at magazine length. As the throat lengthens with use I will have to extend the seating of the bullet until it won't fit in the magazine or I need to replace the barrel.

Here comes the question: What is the shortest length that a barrel freebore can be reduced for a 6XC?

I don't want to get sidetracked, so please just the facts, just facts mam.

Wow, I've asked a question that has everyone stumped?

I suspected it, but now I know that I'm out on the bleeding edge.

It's probably best to get freebore at the minimum so rounds that just fit and feed reliably from the magazine will shoot most accurate. After the throat erodes out a ways, near equal accuracy will be maintained by making reloads have straight case necks well centered on case shoulders.

For best results, ensure the reamer used will make chamber body, shoulder, leade and freebore (and therefore bullet jump to the rifling) as little as possible. Reaming short first then using another reamer to make freebore may not make the best chamber.

And be sure the 'smith has a floating pilot for the reamer that's .0001" smaller in diameter than your barrel's bore diameter. That way, the chamber throat and leade will be perfectly centered on the chamber shoulder and body.

Eppie, This is one of those deals you should be talking to your gunsmith.

First off need to decide which bullet and reamer and you should be able to get a length for your magazine from that.

I read something not too long ago on the 6XC if your going to use Dave Tubbs reamer 3/4 degree throat angle for the 115gr DTAC freebore is .123" and if your going to use 1/1/2 degree angle freebore is .165".

The 105/107gr bullets depending who's reamer freebore can be .090" to .109" plus varies throat angles. What I posted was from posters shooting the 6XC on another site whatever that's worth.

As the throat lengthens from wear same goes for the barrel and I'm sure gunsmith might tell you if setting the barrel back cutting new chamber would be an option or just install a new barrel. If you find a good bullet/reamer combination you may want to buy your own reamer.

Well good luck

You're right, I will. But I'm out of my depth and I like to get as much advice I can before making decision.

I know his done many of these rifles and it's probably best that I just tell him what I'm planning on using the rifle for, the bullets that I will be using and let him do his job.
