I have a Ruger Bearcat that I bought new in 1964 for $49.50, but a new one today will cost a little more, LOL. It is a great little pistol and I have harvested a truck load of squirrels, a few rabbits, a dove and a few snakes with mine........robin

I'll also chime in on the Phoenix HP22A. Fun gun that is cheap and, IMO, looks like a gun. The ~$125 price doesn't hurt, either.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the (relatively) new Browning 1911-22. It is a mini-1911 type gun that is a nice size and weight. The only downside is it is not cheap.

I'll tell ya in reference to the HP22a, I often leave it at home on range days simply because I find myself not putting it down because it is so much fun to shoot and I end up neglected the other guns I bring with me that day.

Of the small ones and under $400, I would choose the Ruger SR22P. Have one and it is very reliable. The problem with the tiny ones is they are often not reliable (feeding jams mostly). The SR22P is small enough to tuck into a pocket and it's very light and still reasonably practical for actually hitting something at more than 10 feet.

If you want to bump up the size a bit, the Ruger 22/45 or Mark III are excellent. I prefer the heavy barrel version for plinking. I suspect these push the $ cap.

I paid MSRP ($149) for my little HP-22A and bought the 5" barrel later ($30?). I also bought a 22/45 Target later. The HP22A has been as reliable or more reliable than the 22/45. With the 5" barrel, the HP-22A is about as accurate as the 22/45 for me. I bought the 22/45 after I had shot the 22/45 over 3,000 times but I now shoot the 22/45 more because it has last shot hold open and the HP doesn't.

The HP-22 with the 3" barrel is very close to the size of my Taurus TCP but it weights almost twice as much.

LOL, I can relate completely. I have a similar problem with my pot metal Walther P22. It always makes me late coming home from the range. Just waiting for all the predicted (by the haters) failures it is going to have so I can no longer shoot it. Thinking I just have to wait for several more thousand rounds through it though.

Saw a I.J. TP22 on sale at Cabella's the other day for $199. It was so cute and fun looking I was sorely tempted.

$199? Kinda out there on the price. I gave a hundred bucks for mine a year or so ago.

Are those still in production? If so, are they decent guns?

Nope, not for over 20 years.

Mine is fun to shoot, but being used, and over twenty years old has a couple minor problems. Sometimes stovepipes a new round coming out of the magazine, and the safety lever thend to loosen, and move to the safe position while being fired. I think a little tinkering, and I'll have it runing fine.
As far as if they are any good, they are what they are. A low priced ZAMAK alloy framed rimfire pistol. For the hundred bucks I paid for mine, I think it is great. But the gun snobs will pile on like they do about Hi-Point, Rough Rider, Phoenix, and any other gun not using a material that meets their "standards"

American Arms also produced the same pistol as the I.J., called the PX22 for a short while. Not as small and sleek as the Walther TPH, but smaller than a PPK. Neat pistols, fun to shoot.

My favorite is the Beretta Bobcat. It was the nicest one I ever had and I used to carry it as a backup when I was a patrol officer.

These turn up from time to time. Had this one since 1987 or so. Very reliable with high speed ammo. Jams with regular velocity. Truly compact.

For a very small used 22lr pistol, I can recommend the Wilkinson Arms Sherry. Very small. Picked one up for $350 a while back so not cheap but pretty cool.

That Wilkerson is pretty cool and very similar to the old Colts. Does Wilkerson Arms have any relationship to the author who is deceased now? He was a big Colt guy.

It's Wilkinson and not Wilkerson. FWIW Wilkinson Arms is perhaps best known for the Linda pistol and the closely related Terry carbine.

Dunno about the author thing.

OcelotZ3, cool pistol, I've never seen one close up.

My Ruger Single-Six Hunter is a lot of fun. It also came with an extra 22 mag cylinder --- I topped it off with a silver Nikon 2x pistol scope. I don't think Ruger sells that exact model anymore, but there are some for sale on GunBroker. Ruger has an excellent repair shop, with wait times minimal.

Oh boy, sure hope the Evil Gun Shop Lady doesn't put one of those up on her facebook page!
Missed a Walther TPH a while back when I couldn't check facebook for a couple days.
Her prices are usually a lot better than the online gun sites, plus no shipping, or transfer fee.

Beretta

I beg to differ about the Beretta. I could not get that little gun to empty a magazine without a jam. I must have tried a dozen types of .22LR ammo.
It was a frustrating experience. I gave the gun to my son. It lives in his gunsafe

I owned a Ruger Bearcat....a very nice little gun. Reliable and well made. I found it a bit heavy for my tastes. I ended up with a S&W 317 Airlite. Have had that for years now. Very happy with it. Reliable and very light.

Have the Taurus TCP and the HP22 Nickel, LIKE the HP22 better to carry (in a Sticky Holster). Comes out of the IWB better than the TCP.

Same Sticky Holster (SM-2) fits both guns.

That photo is one I grabbed off the web because it shows the size pretty well. Mine is the all black version vs. two tone. But it is a very nice little 22lr pistol.
