Pietta "Shooters Model" Remington

I stopped at the local gun shop yesterday, saw many of the same guns as last week (sales are slow), made a offer on a M28 S&W but I'm just to cheap to pay the asking price. Looked at a few long guns, nothing exciting. I was walking out the door when my pard asked me about the old black powder pistol. I had missed it, tagged as a Navy Arms 1858 I checked it out. Something is not right, the blue is nicer than it should be, but it's not a re-blue.

Pop the cylinder and look at the barrel, progressive twist

Look at the trigger guard, it is a shiny black, the guy behind the counter tells me it a new blue process. I think it's tarnished silver. Only marking is the Pietta name and proofs and the serial number looks unusual. I notice the hammer sticks when you fire it so I haggle the price down to $110

. I get home and compare it to my Shooters Model from Navy Arms. Identical, serial number is 700 higher than my Navy Arms copy. I don't think this thing has ever been fired. My good deal of the week, or month, but a $600 revolver for $110 is worth a happy dance

I had a few minutes to check the sticky hammer and found it's binding in the frame. This revolver is tighter than my other shooters model, cylinder lock is S&W tight. The tarnished silver trigger guard does look a lot like fire blue, I'll leave that alone.

At first look these look just like the standard Pietta 1858, the blue is a higher gloss from a better pre blue polish. The grip is slightly wider, the hammer is .010 wider. The cylinder over all length is the same at 2.015, the cylinder notches are cut longer and the chambers are larger and match barrel groove size. There is a more pronounced forcing cone and the progressive twist is obvious.

Was Pietta making the chamber diameter as large back then as has been mentioned on the Dixie web site review below and by others?

Curious...why is a Pietta worth $600? Is this some sort of super accurized model?

It has a gain twist barrel, is factory tuned and chamber/bore tolerances are very tight. The trigger is adjusted for competition.

Geee, that's a shame that you are going to put it up for auction after you fix the hammer up ... we were looking forward to a range report ... but ... ya gotta do what ya gotta do ... we'll all be real sad when we see it up for sale ... but ... just one of those things ...
