I saw a simular question at "The Art of the Rifle". Can you safely use either in an AR-15.

5.56mm is bullet diameter in METRIC. Bullet dia used in 223 caliber is, I believe .224"

Jump over to "The Rifle" section where this is being discussed right now.

Essentially the ammo appears to be identical, it's the chambers (military vs. commercial) that appear to be the root of the differences.

Bullet diameters are identical between the two rounds, according to my references.
