Is this going to be the new norm for a AR-15

Is this going to be the new norm on AR-15 prices or are they going to go up

I've been tracking prices on the one I bought as well a month ago. Got it for $999 (MSRP is $1049, and my LGS is a touch on the high side anyways) and now I've seen it range from 1300-1999 over the past two weeks. Been screen capturing them on my phone...

"IMO" No! The prices should calm down in a little bit when people stop freaking out and buying everything that is black and breaths fire. Once stock returns to LGS and online dealers the prices will start to drop.

you can only wish

If you think that the price is going to calm down.

I have a bridge in Arizona that need your money.

historical data indicated that Ammunition and Firearms do not go down on price.

but keep thinking that...and also keep thinking that the AWB is not going to pass

They'll come back down from astronomical prices to high prices but not to the same as they used to be....AWB or not.

Eventually prices will stabilize, but it's going to take years IMO. Gun sales have already been elevated for the last 4 years, and many companies have had trouble keeping up with demand for their products.

Now demand has skyrocketed on top of the already elevated levels, just an unprecedented level of demand. If demand were to go back to "normal" at this very second, I bet it would take a full year or more for the industry as a whole to catch up.

I expect the cost of AR's and such to stay elevated for the foreseeable future. The only way prices will ever drop is if they stop selling at the elevated prices.

That seems to be the new norm for Cheaper Than Dirt. The other day they were trying to sell Beta C 100 mags for $700 a piece.

Eventually prices should come back down. They won't until politicians find some new cause to harp on. I'm not aware of any manufacturers raising their MSRP's abnormally in respone to the current climate, it's retailers and panic buyers driving the current prices. When this all blows over and demand drops off abruptly, we may even be able to find some great deals for overstocked retailers or those trying to recoup what they spent on panic buying.

Demand dictates price. If these prices stay this high the amount of customers that have $1500-$2500 to spend on a AR is going to slow down. When AR's could be had for as little as $600 some would buy 2 or 3 of them. At these prices less people will be willing to part with that much cash for 1 =less demand.

Looking at the facts, everything will depend on the AWB legislation.

IF AWB legislation passes, which there is not enough support in the house based upon 2A supporters elected there, then the world of the AR COULD forever be changed. It will depend on WHAT legislation is actually passed. The initial volley from Feinstein is just that. Chances are that IF it passes, there would be some chopping on it before the final vote.

Now, if NO AWB legislation passes, then this WILL die down at some point. This hysteria is not unprecedented. Look at threads from 2008 and you will see the SAME themes as today: skyrocketed AR prices, ammo gone, reloading components scarce, forecasts that it would never be the same.

Guess what? It settled down and people were buying ARs for $600 until a couple months ago.

It will all hinge upon the legislation.

^^^I agree with globemaster3^^^

I'd like to add that consumers drove the prices up with their panic buying.

It's the perfect storm for stratospheric AR prices.

Don't forget to thank a Democrat.

I bought that same AR not 5 months ago for $950 and it came with an extra stock set.
I dont think prices will go back to what they were but I do think they will go down.

Plotting a price trajectory into the future based on the events of the last six weeks will virtually guarantee that your forecast will be incorrect.

The current condition reflects a somewhat inelastic supply and extremely stimulated demand. Compounding that imbalance is the somewhat stimulated demand of the last four years. If memory serves, six years ago AIM was selling no-name complete ARs from their "bargain bin" for a flat $500.

At one end of the spectrum, the Feinstein-Schumer future, your AR will be an NFA item and may be simultaneously valueless and priceless, or very expensive. If that future contains no future restriction and no imminent threat of future restriction, I believe you should not only see supply catch up to demand, but a suppressed demand and an additional supply from the secondary market of people with five rifles sitting in a crowded safe that they don't shoot.

In the last decade, a lot of people have learned to sell their homes at a loss and to liquidate portions of their stock portfolios at a loss. In a future with no further legal restrictions, I would anticipate that we will see people learn that they have to sell their spare rifles at a loss.

This analysis may be worth no more than you paid to read it.

zukiphile, I agree 100%. This is why I feel that AR's and other black evil rifles will drop from current price levels. I hope that we (Gun owners) don't grow tired of fighting for our rights and let a NAWB (Not Assault Weapons Ban) happen. Be sure to remember those in DC that are only playing it safe to get reelected and once they are will push to take yet another bite out of our rights but, again only if we let them.

The only people that think they will stay elevated in price are the speculators that camp out at big box stores hoping to get one to flip online. Cabelas, academy and Walmart prices haven't changed more than the 3%-5% they were going to go up before the panic.
Prices will fall once the AWB is voted down. All the people that ran out a bought at inflated prices are going to try and dump the guns before prices drop, helping to drive prices down.
CTD prices are starting to come down, several local boards have guns that aren't selling. The $2k basic rifle prices are gone.
Mag prices however are going to be absurd for 6-9 months untill they can get caught up with back orders.

Simple economics is what we are dealing with, supply and demand. Demand is so great because of people freaking out and panic buying. This is not only affecting AR's but everything else with maybe the exception of black powder arms. When the supply pipeline fills back up prices will stabilize and drop providing an outright ban does not implement.

Everytime the stinking liberals in DC do this prices spike. It's happend before, remember? Go to the RUGER WEBSITE if you have not already done so and tell them to knock it off.

I happened to be at the Palmetto State Armory brick & mortar store in Columbia, SC yesterday around 6:30pm they close at 7:00pm and they had 5 complete PSA 16" M4s come in as I was standing there. The guy behind the counter was just checking them in. The two with hammer forged barrels were $899.99 and the non HFB were $799.99 the guy asked me if I wanted one and I thought about it, but decided I would pass on it I know I could have bought one and made $500+ today on the Internet if I had wanted, but something just doesn't feel right about that. In the 15 mins I was there they sold two of them and I am sure they didn't last long this mourning.

It's started happening around here as well. The two LGSs I tend to frequent have both had a few models of ARs hit the shelves, and stay there, at least for a reasonable amount of time. When the panic was at its height they would have been gone as fast as people could say "me, me!". Now they don't have a huge variety, generally 2-3 models at most, but the point is the things aren't literally flying off the shelves anymore. Neither is the ammo, when they actually get it in. It sells out because so far they aren't getting in great quantities, but like the ARs it isn't flying out the door.

Shoot, my favorite has had Pmags for DAYS now, whereas before they'd have been gone in minutes.

Two things.

Just cause people are asking for a price doesn't mean they are getting it.

That isn't the new norm. In fact I dont think its todays norm. I bought a colt with an extra clip and a used case for $1,400 yesterday.

Current inventories are low due to the panic but most dealers have inventory trickling in. If you shop at a reputable one you should be able to find a reasonable price.

There will be no AWB...
Even Biden and Feinstein are (almost) grudgingly admitting this.

No, this will not be the "new normal"...

I'm content to just sit and wait it out, like I've done before.

I'll be there to buy it when the guy that paid two grand for an $800 rifle he didn't even need and did it out of panic, needs to sell it to pay his mortgage.

Only the new norm if you plan on buying from the profiteering scumbags at CTD.
