S&W 15-22

There is a range opening that is selling the 15-22 for $499, I seem to remember them being in the mid-400's and I know there are cheaper alternatives like the Mossberg 22. Is 499 a good price? Or is that the sort of price that is good but still could be better once the prices go back to normal?

Any additional thoughts relating to the 15-22 and other tactical .22's (I'd do the Ruger 10-22 if the ZK22 wasn't so back ordered :P) are gladly welcome.

This would be a first gun, however as far as shooting I do love the feel of 9mm, 38 special, and .45 . I liked shooting the Ruger Mark II but some other .22's were a little boring, but I have watched many videos of people loving the 15-22. Thoughts to that? As money is thin currently. I know I'm in the rifle forum but I do tend more towards pistols, revolvers and EBR's Might laugh at me but was also thinking of a Hi-Point 9mm Carbine.

The M&P15-22 is a great choice, a buddy loves his. He paid a little over $400 2 years ago, I paid $450 for the Colt about the same time. Both have been great at the range.

We bought ours for $540 or so. My range is selling one for $500 new in box. If you can find it at that price, that's good for the current climate.

As far as being boring to shoot, I think you'll find you don't have to worry about it when you get it. It is definitely gratifying.

Some people might laugh about the Hi-Point Carbine, not me. My wife has one in 9mm and loves it. Never had a single FTF or FTE with it. It is a simple rifle that I think is a little ugly but I can look past that if it's reliable and it has been for 2 years now.

the S&W 15-22 is a great little gun. That's about right for the current price. You can't go wrong with one of them. Their accurate and lots of fun to shoot. They are very similar to their "big brothers" in many respects. Have had one for several years and put thousands of rounds through it without any malfunctions.

$499 isn't bad. I paid $479 pre panic. Scroll through some threads here as this question has come up frequently. Its a great rifle. Stay away from the Mossberg. It will only disappoint you. The challenge will be finding .22 ammo. Hopefully that will get back to normal soon.

I may be necroposting here, but when I decided to go the "tactical 22" route, I looked at the Mossberg (until my LGS owner told me he would only do a transfer with teeth gritted) and the MP 15-22. I ended up getting a Ruger 10/22, and I have ordered the pieces to assemble it:

Ruger 10/22- wood stock/blue barrel: $250 after tax NIB
ATI Strikeforce 6 pos/folding stock: $70 used (Armslist)
Barska 30mm red dot: $40 LNIB (box opened, never used; Amazon)
UTG contour fore grip: $10 NEW (Amazon)
Single point bungee sling: $6 NEW (Amazon)

My total cost ended up being $376 including all shipping, taxes, and fees, and it has all the junk I would be putting on a 15-22 with a more versatile stock.

Moral of the story: sometimes it's cheaper to scrounge what you want and DIY.

Bought my wife a M&P 15-22 about 4 years ago. Probably has over 10,000 rounds through it without a problem. As for price, my local Wal-Mart and Academy carry them for about $425.

I have a 22 pistol I find boring. Never really been into 22. I broke down and got a MP 15-22 last week... Mainly to teach my son with when he gets a little older. I took it out shooting on Sunday... Man, that thing is fun. I am hooked.

You will enjoy it!

I went to the Range with a buddy of mine a few weeks ago, with his M&P 15/22 and our Ruger Mark III's and our 10/22's. The guy next to us had the new mossberg tactical AR/22. While we were shooting having tons of fun with our stuff, the little kid next to us was just bummbed-out and depressed because his mossberg wouldnt work worth a crap. It was one jam right after the other, with all of his mags and three different kinds of ammo. "What a P.O.S." that thing was... "So we asked the little guy" if he'd ask his dad, if he could just shoot one of ours, and use his own ammo.... 5 minutes later, with our gun's and that little guy was all smiles and fun in the sun... Now he say's it back to the basics and back to the LGS to get his own ruger, or M&P and get rid of that new mossberg P.O.S.
"Glad we could help out" and I was thrilled to see the kid smile so much, "not even our kid" just some other guy at the range, who came down there with his kid to have fun.... "Awesome" experience all around...

The 15-22 is a great gun. I've put thousands of rounds through mine and don't think I've ever had a malfunction. It's very similar in all respects to the bigger AR's. I put a red dot sight on mine and am amazed how accurate the gun is. It's really fun to shoot.

I looked at the Mossberg - as it was cheaper. Who knows what is true, but the guy at the counter claims that he has heard of several complaints. He claims he personally knew a father, son and grandfather all buy one (3 total). Apparently, each of the three slowly had feed issues one after the other. I decided to just get the S&W after hearing that

I had an MP15-22, generally a good gun. Mine went back as it had reliability issues, came back shooting anything like a dream as far as cycling went.

I was hoping to have very good accuracy, it was ok for a plinker but not a good target option (some are, most are ok and some are plain bad).

I would check Gun Broker for a used one.

$500 is high, you should be able to get one in the low 400s and used around 350-400

It's a great gun. My entire family loves it and it's been freakishly reliable which isn't always the case with 22LR guns. To see it in action check out my review above.

Not sure what is a good current price, but the S&W 15-22 is a darn good rifle. I bought one a couple of years ago and it has far exceeded my expectations.

I also have the S&W 15-22. Great little rifle. I am primarily a pistol guy but shooting the 15-22 is a lot of fun.

I have found for me so far that loading the mags 4 or 5 short of capacity works better. Maybe after working in some I won't have to.

I also recently bought the Hi Point 9mm carbine and also enjoy shooting that one. Fun gun for the price.

Either or both will bring a smile to your face.

MP 15-22

As someone who has experience shooting both, get the MP 15-22. Go take a look at some of my reviews at my site - The Best 22 Rifle. The Mossy is nice but it can be pickier about ammo brands, just my 2 cents. When all else fails, go shoot both and see what you like best.

Finally got all my pieces in and installed. Took it to the range last weekend before my scope came in, and it shoots like a dream. I just have to wait til this weekend to sight the scope in. I must say, it does make the rounds in my ammo box disappear rather quickly...

I have four AR's built for specific needs, 10-22's, Garands and Carbines etc, etc. The 15-22 however is the most fun one can have and at a minimal price or loaded with about every AR goodie you can imagine. I put red dots ,flashlights, stocks etc on mine but seem to go back to the original MOE condition with an Aimpoint and shoot and shoot it. Visited Old Stony's personal game plantation in Texas recently and the M&P took a pile of Raccoons...what a hoot!

There are 12 different models of the S&W 15-22 that vary from $499 to $770 in price MSRP.
I initially bought a Mossberg because of the price and after 1 trip to the range I traded it in on the MOE 15-22. I think the biggest improvement I made was installing an AR15 drop in trigger assembly. Fun gun to shoot.

The S&W .22 is a much better firearm than the Colt.
Plus, the lightweight construction means that it's light enough to use the SlideFire stock on it.

I can vouch for IBMikey's post about his 15-22. It shoots great and he did shoot a passel of racoons with it. Great fun little rifles for the money ! I'll try to post a pic of some of them, if I can navigate this confounded computer thing.
I have a pic of him with some of them, but it's after a shooting session with a 76' in 45/60.
