What to do on a misfire
I always try and practice proper gun safety whenever handling a gun, but have never had formal safety training, only been taught by my dad and granddads and then tried to use good sense. One thing I have experienced several times is misfires with some big boy ammo. What is the proper protocal for handling this and disposing of it properly?

First, I wait a few seconds in case it is a hang fire, then I remove the cartridge and re-insert it into the gun and try again. If it does not fire, it get gets trashed. As far as "proper" disposal protocal, I don't know. But if it is rifle or handgun ammo and I want to get rid of it at home, I'll pull the bullets and empty out the powder. The powder gets burned and the rest gets dumped into the trash. Shotgun shells, I cut the hulls and empty out the shot. Then it goes in the trash or I make a little gun powder fire in the back yard in a paint can.

While you're waiting to see if it's a hang fire, make sure it's pointed down range or other safe direction.

I chuck them into the woods. I figure it's safer marinating in rain water and dirt for 20 years + rather than toting it home with me. Safer for me at least.

I got a 22 revolver that hang fires. Here is what I do:
1. Point gun down range. 2. count to 15 by 1000, 1001, etc 3. Use ammo in other gun and it has fired every time. I do not know if this is right, but it worked for me 100 percent of the time. |
