Zastava Tokarevs

Has anyone tried out those newly made 9mm tok pistols from zastava that they're selling here and there? Was thinking of snagging a few as I've always wanted a good tokarev and have a lot of 9mm with nothing to shoot it out of.

Where did you find these new Tokarevs? Are they really in 9MM?

Old 1990s Yugo Tokarev's chambered in 9mm.

Imported by American Arms. I haven't seen a NEW one--could be cool if they started making them again.

They're making them again. Buds and Aim seem to be getting a good supply of them in lately.

Haven't tried the Zastava, but now this thread has me interested in one. Looks like they are going for the $250-300 range.

I did have a Norinco Tokarev in 9mm I shot for several years. It never missed a beat and was a great gun. Wish I hadn't sold it. It looks identical to these Zastava with the exception of the safety. Should be a great gun if you choose to get one.

Century arms is importing them from Zastava in Serbia as the M70 in 9mm and M57 in 7.62x25. I bought one of the M57's and I like the slide mounted safety.

Yea between the price and the Tok design I thought they'd be a good bet for a extra pistol to have around but hadn't been able to find any info on them. Plus being newly made I thought could be a plus.

I just bought a Zastava M70A last month.

Cleaned it up and took it to the range, and it worked 100%. Nice and accurate, too.

I liked that it had modern safety features and can be carried cocked and locked. My only knock on the gun was that it had the normal, Tokarev trigger. Probably about a 7 pound trigger with some creep. All in all, I like it. Super rugged design and great price.

I know that Bud's, Classic, and J&G have all had these, but currently are out of stock. I bought mine locally.

I'll attach a pic later. For some reason, the pic won't work right now.

K-Var Corp imports a version of these that has upgraded grips and slightly different frame/slide contours as well. Check them out, it may be similar to the M-88 that you seek. Here's where I saw it... M88 Zastava Looks like they only have mags currently. Probably all sold out like everyone else.

Here's a pic of the Zastava from Century...

The Tokarev is a good, basic gun, but the originals do not have safeties. The result is that to meet import requirements, importers put on safeties that were, to say the least, not well made or designed. If the new ones have good safeties, they should be as good as any single action 9mm.

We have a Norinco 213 9mm Tokarev in the family, with one of those horrible frame mounted safeties that falls out if you're not careful. I like the gun pretty well, but would like a better safety on it. How much better are those safeties on the newer ones?

For the low price they're selling for, it's hard for me to argue against buying one, but I have a few questions for those who own them.

Is there a warranty, and if so, what is it?

Do the 9mm pistols seem to feed truncated cone and/or broad-nosed JHP bullets well?

Does the manual advise against using 9mm+P and/or 9mm NATO ammo? (Considering that the gun normally shoots 7.62x25 Tok, I'm thinking +P is a no-brainer, but it doesn't hurt to check. )

Is that rear sight as sharp as it looks? Yeesh! Doesn't look like it would be ideal for CCW, particularly in an IWB holster.

Do the mags drop free?

The new safeties are much better than the add-ons that are required for importation of the surplus Tokarevs. They were designed to be on them unlike the add-ons.

Too bad they don't offer the original, safety-less slides on the surplus market. All one would have to do is set the new slide aside, and put on the older slide, and have the original gun design, with no safety. Plusses and minuses both ways, but some folks just like guns as they were originally designed.

I would have preferred the safety-less original M57 as well. Damn bureaucrats just trying to keep us sheeple safe from the big bad wolf.

have another question

do the new yugo M57 tokarev (7.62x25) and M88A (the 9mm) have the same barrel length ?

and then 2 consequent questions (if above is yes)
can the new 7.62x25 accept the 9mm barrel and mags ?

Barrels are different lengths, M57 is 4.5" and M88A is 3.78".

Not sure about the mag or how they are configured since the OAL of the 9mm is shorter than the 7.62x25. Not sure about the barrel interchangability either.

I seem to like that M88 gun.

But all the pics show the right side, and I can't tell where the safety is located. Is it slide mounted? If so, the idea of cocked-n-locked just got less attractive since those are more awkward and slow to set to *bang* mode. Browning got it just right with the frame mounted safety!

Anybody know about this M88 safety?

The safety is located on the slide and is exactly like the M57 in the picture above. You can also click HERE to see a whole bunch of pictures of the M88.

The M57A safety, though slide mounted, is long enough to easily flip off with a firing grip.
I have owned Tokarevs before, and I can't tell you all how happy I am to have a brand new Zastava Tok at a bargain price.
I put 70rds of Romanian surplus through it yesterday...it shot like a Tokarev...meaning perfectly.

amd6547, would you consider the new M57A for cary ?

In other words, the safety location, trigger control, holster friendliness, slide pull effort -- are all of them friendly enough in this new version for carry (assuming the right ammunition choices are availble)

thx

I most certainly would carry my M57A.
The Tokarev is perhaps one of the easiest full sized pistols to carry, due to how thin it is.
The safety on this new variation is positive, and easy to use. Slide pull is quite easy. The trigger is bit heavy, but I feel it will improve with use.
I am a fan of the Tokarev round. However, JHP ammo is limited and difficult to find. In fact, I just sent an email to Hornady suggesting they produce a decent SD load. I know they would sell a bunch.
