9mmNATO carry-protection rounds...

The subject of 9mm or 9x19mm carry/defense rounds comes up often. Many TFL members post their choices.
The top US loads for the 9mm are the Winchester Ranger T 127gr +P+ JHP, the Ranger T 124gr +P JHP(bonded), the Remington Golden Saber 124gr +P JHP(bonded), the Corbon 115gr DPX 9mm, the Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P JHP, the Hornady TAP 9mm. Some members use or endorse the 147gr bullets but I prefer the 124gr wt bullets. You practice or train with 124gr rounds the use the same size/wt JHP or carry 124gr JHP 9mm rounds.

Personally, I use the Hornady Critical Defense for carry ammo.

I was just talking about this in another thread.

You need to buy a box of each kind of ammo available to you. Go to the range and see which ones fire the best from your weapon.

Here's the post I made in another thread to give you and idea of what you should do.

I shot 50 rounds of 230gr Fiocchi FMJ and they went all over the place.

Put 50 rounds of Winchester 230gr FMJ target range stuff bought from Walmart. They went two inches low, but I could fire them consistently once I saw where they were going. Good rounds.

Put 20 rounds of Winchester Supreme Elite 230 Bonded PDX JHP Ammo through it. They were consistently 2" to the right of point of aim. Again, I could compensate.

Then I tried 25 rounds of Remington Ulimate Home Defense 230gr. BJHP Ammo. They went to point of aim. Great stuff.

The rest of these all fired to point of aim.

ACP Fiocchi 200gr Jacketed Holow Point Ammo

45 ACP Speer LE Gold Dot 185gr. HP Ammo

Winchester Ranger Talon 230gr. HP Ammo

Fiocchi 230gr XTP Hollow Point Ammo

That's all the ammo types I've put through it. Like has been said, find the round that works best with your weapon because my buddy with a five month older XD45ACP had very different results with different ammo as well that day. What worked best for me, both $$ wise and point of aim wise, went all over the place for him. Just the mood of the weapon. Ya gotta find what turns her on.
You should try not only different round types, FMJ, JHP, etc..., but you should try different grains as well. For my weapon, it fired better with higher weight ammo than it did with lower weight overall. The Fiocchi 230gr HP ammo fired about the best, but it isn't my first choice for defensive carry. I was using the Winchester Supreme Elite 230 Bonded PDX JHP Ammo as my carry ammo, but after that trip to the range, I switched to Winchester Ranger Talon 230gr. HP Ammo because it has a great expansion rate and also, it fires cleanly and without my having to adjust my point of aim. I put the front site on the head above and slight left of the right eye and that's right where it went from 15-45'.

9mm rounds not .45acp...

Note:
The topic is for 9x19mm carry/defense rounds not the larger .45acp.

I understand that. My advice still applies though. Try different rounds until you find one that performs well in your weapon.

I use Federal 9BPLE 115gr JHP +P+ on and off duty. It's an older design but well proven.

My reply echos ClydeFrog's post. Any of those rounds are effective and reliably high quality.

In the last couple years I've carried only two different rounds;

I've found the Hornady TAP rounds FPD to be consistently more accurate than some others.

The Winchester Ranger T +P I load in my larger pistols, also very accurate.

For serious practice I use NATO ball as it feels and shoots similar to my carry ammo but is much cheaper.

In 9mm, I prefer a 124-127grn bullet at 1200fps or more. My current loading of choice is Winchester Ranger 127grn +P+, but I wouldn't hesitate to use Speer Gold Dot 124grn +P as well.

I have a Sigma 9VE and a PF-9.

The PF-9 is loaded up with 124gr XTP's over 4.4gr. of TiteGroup. It's my carry weapon. The Sigma stay's loaded up with 147gr XTP's over 3.8gr of TiteGroup being the main house pistol. These loads shoot great in either pistol. I know XTP is not state of the art. But at the price point I can afford to reload a lot with them and shoot them thus staying proficient. During the winter months I use a 50/50 mix of FMJ and JHP.

+p+

I know my Hi power can handle +p but I don't know if I can use +p+ in it or not.

I personally carry the 124 grain Gold Dots, but like several of the others I would feel quite confident in any of Clyde's list as long as I put a couple of mags through my pistol to ensure good cycling.

For me, in my Springfield XD9SC, it's Corbon DPX.

I use the Generic Remington 115 grain HP loads you buy in boxes of 100. Not top of the line, but they work well enough and are priced so I can run a lot of it through my pistols to ensure reliable function.

My favorites are Winchester Ranger 127 +p+ or Cor-Bon DPX. YMMV.

Lots of good rounds. Corbon DPX +p's is what I have packed in my P228 right now.

Gives pin point accuracy out of my 9mm.
Yours may vary.

I use Magtech's 92.6gr SCHP in my Sig 2022. I know it's a bit on the light side, but it's available and cycles reliably in my gun. Hydro Shok's are also available here, but I had a few failures to feed with it.

I'm happy with the Magtech stuff. Until Mack's finally gets some Speer 124gr GDHP in stock.
