NMLRA rear sight regulation-question

I am currently building another longrifle, a .54 flintlock. I know that the NMLRA regulations specify the minimum distance from rear of barrel-breechplug to rear sight. Can anyone out there tell me what this distance is? I am thinking it is 6", but it could be 8". I was disqualified from the PA flintlock team some years ago because I installed the rear sight too close to the rear of the barrel on my .40. I may use this rifle in competition and do not want a repeat.

I looked all over for my copy of the NMLRA range rules and regulations but couldn't find it. If I remember correctly, it's 6 inches in front of the breech plug.

You might buy a copy of the rule book from them before cutting the sight dovetail or just make it 8 inches to be sure.

Thanks, I am also pretty sure that it is 6". After some experimentation, I believe I am going to cut the dovetail right at 7".

The ludicrous thing about it is that there were focusing apertures mounted on the stock right after the tang in the position of a folding tang sight. The focusing aperture wasn't a sight, but it aided the eye in seeing the front and rear sight sharper. The old ones knew of this and you can see it on the target rifles of the percussion era. I've even seen it on a crossbow at the Frazier Arms Museum in Louisville, KY.

However, you can't fight the rules and you can't argue with the judges.
