10 power scope for Ruger 10/22?

Greetings!

I need a hand, so I have wandered over from the handgun side of the board to seek advice from those of you who know long guns better than I.

I have someone looking for a good 10 power scope, rings, and mount for a Ruger 10/22. Any recommendations?

Why 10 power? With the exception of shooting small groups on paper, a lower power would be much more useful. Either way, I'd take a close look at the Weaver Classic V 2-10

I'd use a Weaver TO-9 mount and Leupold Rifleman rings.

IMO that's too much scope for that gun (cartridge). A 4X scope may be ideal for it (if you're into scopes).

Nevertheless, I've always liked the value in Burris scopes. The ones I've had were solid and dependable.

I agree that it's a lot. He's determined, though. /shrug

Thank you for the replies, so far!

A variable power like 4 to12 would leave options open for almost any situation I can think of. I have a variable power with adjustable objective on my favorite 22 lr. Does your friend realize how much 10 power limits field of view at 22 ranges?

I don't know whether he doesn't understand, or doesn't care. I did probe a bit about that, but he's pretty adamant. I may make another run at it tomorrow.

How much does he want to spend? My experience with optics has been that you get what you pay for.

If he's looking for max accuracy bench rest type shooting at typical .22 distances, he's going to want something with an adjustable objective that he can adjust the parallax on.

After lots of research I put a Leupold VX-2 4x-12x AO on a new 10/22T last weekend.

http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-...fle-scope.html

It shoots 10 shot 1/8 inch groups at 25 yards with CCI Green Tag. Trying to decide if I could gain anything by pillar bedding/free floating.

Why 10 power? With the exception of shooting small groups on paper

Bedlamite--That is the reason right there. Need any more be said?. I have 7 rifles now and none with the exception of the 22-250 i just got last week has anything less than a 24 power scope on them. My 10/22's have a 6-18 x 50 on them. My 22-250 i just got has a Nikon Prostaff 4-9 x 40. Very crisp clean and great scope ( as long as you want to shoot 50 yards or less). The bullseyes on my targets are the size of a pencil in diameter. At 100 yards with that NIkon i can't even see it. For Deer hunting a low power scope is good, for anything else they are useless.

As mentioned by another, just get a good variable power scope. You can power down for shooting small critters and power up for target shooting.

We have one guy at the range that shoots a Anshultz 22. He has a Sightron 10-40 x 56 scope on it and can consistantly hit a 6 inch metal plate at 300 yards with it

For years I have had a 4X Weaver on a 10-22. For the general purpose use I had for that rifle, it was perfect.

I bought a CZ 452 rifle a couple of months ago and I will only be target shooting with it.

I put a Nikon Monarch 4.5-14X50 on it. That scope is great for what I intend to do with the rifle but it is way too much for anything else.

You can't focus it to 25 yards and 50 yards is almost the close limit for it. . .but. . . at 100 yards it works fine.

I used that scope because I already had it and I have a picatinny rail on the rifle so it is easy to move the scope to another rifle if I want.

If I was in the market to buy a scope for the rifle, I would really look at a Leupold VXIII in something around a 2-10 power and put it in some QD Warne rings and call it good.

Are you kidding me?. That does not seem right. I know you mean on 14 power, but it should still focus at that range for sure. My 6-24 will focus at the range on 24 power very easy.

Make sure he buys a rimfire scope, the impulse from a blowback action is different than that of a gas operated centerfire and is hell on them, also the parallax on .22 scopes is set closer than on a centerfire scope. If he doesn't get a rimfire scope he had better keep it cheap, a fine scope will break under a. 22 before a 300 win mag. Doesn't make sense but that's how it is. Almost every brand worth anything has a scope engineered and labeled for rimfire, I would stick to names like Leupold, Burris, Vortex etc. If he wants to go cheap bsa makes a pretty nice "sweet 22" that has a top turret dialed for the 22lr trajectory so all you do is dial your yardage and no holdover, last I knew they ran around $175.
Remember the rules of thumb for scopes apply for rimfire too... Figure 1x power per 100 yards distance (unless mentioned before you're punching paper) and spend AT LEAST as much on your optics as you have in your rifle. This will always pay off.

Nope. It won't do it. Not even on 4.5x.

I think it has more to do with the parallax adjustment. I don't pay attention to the range markings on the dial.

I focus on the target from blurry to clear to blurry again and then somewhere in the middle.

I focus on the center red dot of the targets I am using and at 25 yards, I can get close to being in focus but am not there. You cannot go from far away to being in focus and then moving far enough to be out of focus near. You can only get "close" . . .and that isn't good enough.

The scope is fine for shooting 50 yards and farther but does not work at closer distances.

LOL I guess I shouldn't mention that I have a 24X scope on one of my 22s.

H&R 5200 w/Remington 24X scope.

Kraig,

What range do you normally shoot that rifle?

How much does your buddy know about scopes and the difference between centerfire and rimfire . IMO if he is going to be shooting less then 100yds he will need a scope with an adjustable objective or a scope designed for a 22lr. Unless you are a well disciplined shooter paralax can be a real issue when trying to be very accurate at shorter ranges with a center fire scope

I would suggest a variable power of 3-9 or 4-12 with an adjustable objective

Also what's the budget ? less then $100 or anything up to $2-$250 There are many scopes out there that will do the job at any of these prices.

I know the swfa ss scopes have a fairly decent reputation and offer a 10x at a pretty good price or you might look at sightron scopes which appear to be on sale right now at a pretty good discount.

After doing a lot of research over at Rimfire Central, I decided to try a Mueller 4.5-14x40 APV. Three years later, I have four of these scopes on my .22's and couldn't be happier. The glass and build quality on the APV is spectacular for a $125 scope.

2-10 would be my choice. I have a 3-9 scope and using it within 100 yards on anything but three is tedious. Maybe from a bench or bipod supportd.

I've got an APT on a 223 bolt gun, and have been pretty impressed with it for a budget optic. Glass is clear and stays clear even at higher power, and I really like the mildot reticle and target turret design. Another 10x that I've really liked is the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x. It's a great, budget mildot scope that is capable of being a serious scope if you ever want to put it on a bigger caliber. I ran mine on a Savage 308 that was a 1000 yard gun and wasn't disappointed. I like too that it's a mil/mil scope if you want to go that route, though they also have a mil/moa model.

Ditto. I've got an APV and I love it. It's the perfect scope for a 10/22. Go over to rimfirecentral.com and you'll see the guys over there really love them as well.

On one of my 10 22s I have one of these:
http://muelleroptics.com/mu41650igr#more-168

Absolutely love this scope. 4-16AO scope that is right on the money!

I originally had this scope (which I purchased used from Warbirdlover - a great guy to do business with) mounted on one of my target rifles in .223. Best three shot group with that set up at 100 yards was 0.21".

On my highly modified 10 22 it shoots one hole all day long at 25 - 50 yards.

On my most recent 10 22 purchase (still completely stock) I was looking for fast handling so I put this red dot on:
http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/...-low-30mm-ring
I shoot out to 125 yards regularly with this set up with decent accuracy; and much quicker target acquisition and rounds down range.

Two totally different approaches to optics for a 10 22 for two very different applications. Both are a lot of fun, just different.

10x is not too powerful, I have a 16x on a 10/22 and love it. Its a Barska 4-16x50 sniper scope. $99 and holds zero great.

If he insists on a straight 10X, then so be it. Its his money to spend. I am sure that you have advised him by now about getting something that is variable with range of 10X or more. When he discovers the shortcomings, he will either live with it or get another scope. You can lead a horse to water, but cant make him drink.

fixed 10

I think I would watch for a USA Weaver T-10. Ebay is a start. Parallex adjustable, w/ target turrets, it would be a good paper puncher. I'm believing of course that the 10/22 in question is going to be tricked out with heavy barrel, good trigger, etc. A stock 10/22..........I'd put a whole lot less scope on that.

I've got a fixed 10 on a Savage MkII -TR. Its purpose in life is to shoot groups and smallish targets on our 100 yd home range. It will not focus inside 50 yds, .......but for what I'm doing with it, its OK. Its next glass will be parallex adjustable.
