7400 Tactical .243?
Has anyone else thought about a cheap tactical 7400 as a good assualt rifle!
You can pick one up for around three hundred in .243 then another 70 bucks get a tacital pistol grip stock with a adjustable stock from ATI! Cheaper than dirt has 10 round magazines for the .243 for around 25 so 400 bucks to have a good tacital gun! I have never personally liked the looks of an ak or sks and a AR clone is way beyond my budget but have thought many times of saving up for either a DPMS or an fal! My uncle recently planted the seed of an 7400 or a 742 as a cheaper alternative and after researching have come to terms with the idea that this might actually make a great tacital weapon! I have never been fond of the idea of spray and pray leaning more towards the idea of every shot counts and the 10 rounds seems adequate enough for me!

I've read that turning these into assult rifles is ill advised. These we made to be hunting rifles, not for battle. I have been doing a lot of reserch on 7400's lately because I'm buying one in 30-06.

Well said Dave. Practice makes professionals, not that it is forseeable that we will need said people outside the military and law enforcement.

The 30-06 I'm getting was $250 with Leopold scope. may be it's a bit more common than a .243.

Given that an assault rifle is, by definition, capable of selective or fully automatic fire, I'm quite uncertain as to how a Remington 7400 could ever be defined in such a manner (unless, of course, it has been illegally modified).

I had a 7400 in .30-06. The only problem I had with it was keeping the scope zero'd in. It was very accurate with its iron sights but I owned it before I found out you can get your eyes fixed. I tried Leupold, Bushnell and Nikon scopes on it. The 7400 knocked 'em all cockeyed...Wish I had it back because I have had my eyes fixed!!

Interesting concept you have there...
...why, with just a little file work on a Choate 870 PG buttstock, and a Harris #5 bipod adapter; and maybe an aftermarket magazine or two; perhaps a good Leupold scope...it can be done!
Be mindful of the fact that this IS a hunting rifle that needs to be CLEAN. It is NOT a military rifle, but can be made into something special, small and powerful for a few precise 'hammer of Thor' hits, espcially in .30-06...! Y2K without an AR15... Elk Emplacement Rifle... It was everything it shouldn't be, and then some. More like it oughtta be, now:

Yeah I got the 06 on layaway. I couldnt get it at th time so I figure I'd put it on hold with layaway. (school bills are a bit high at the moment )
I figure if the rifles a jam-o-matic, I still got a Leopold scope and whatever I get for trading the rifle back in. So I see it as a win-win. |
