For anyone shooting 95 grn Berger VLDs for .243
I decided to give the Berger VLDs a shot in my stock Savage Model 12 with 26" heavy barrel chambered in .243 WIN. The barrel has a 1 in 9.25" twist.
I loaded up 2 batches, keeping the brass, primer, powder and charge the same...but adjusting the COAL only. Brass is Remington (first firing, neck-sized, neck turned, flash hole deburred, chamfered with lyman vld chamfer). Primers were CCI. Powder was H4895 at 33.0 grains. I seated the first batch .001"off the lands (+/- .0005"....) and the second batch .010" off the lands(+/- .0005"....I am using a Lee press and dies....gimme a break!! LOL). I chrony'd 5 rounds from each. Batch 1: 2812, 2807, 2818, 2789, 2783... Avg:2801 ES: 35 1 Std. Dev.: 15 Batch 2: 2807, 2789, 2789, 2795, 2824... Avg:2800 ES: 35 1 Std. Dev.: 14 Then I shot 2 3-Shot groups with each batch at 100 yards. (5 shots in the prone position KILL my neck!) Batch 1 (seated .001" off lands): .500" (2 shots 50% on eachother), .750" (2 shots 33% on eachother) Batch 2 (seated .010" off lands): .375" (all three shots overlapping), .6875" It looks to me that either OAL will produce decent groups. First impression seem that a small .010" jump is slightly better. I will try this again and see if the results differ ( I know.... 6 shots with each batch is not a big sample). The bullets appear to be stabilized before they hit the 100 yard target. No keyholes. Shots were made in the prone position with Harris bipod. No sandbags were used ( I am gonna break down and get some though to tighten up my groups). I hope this helps those interested in shooting the VLDs. Good luck and continue to be safe!
