44 WCF

I was not sure where to post this question. So I am posting here, Moderators please feel free to move to different page, if needed.
I am looking into purchasing some replica firearms. The ones I am interested in are made for 45 long colt (no problem I have plenty of that) or they are made for 44 WCF. I have not seen that one in any store. I have to figure that is different from 44 mag, or they would list 44 mag. Anyone have any information on that type of 44. Just curious what the difference is and where to find it.

Also commonly referred to as 44-40. Common in "cowboy" type revolvers and lever guns. Slightly rare in others, but IMHO, a good cartridge.

Hundy, this thread probably does belong somewhere other than general discussion. (No big thing, don't worry about it.) If you told us what type(s) of replica firearms you're thinking of buying, it would make it easier to decide which forum would be best for your thread.

The original loading of the .44 Winchester Center Fire was a 200gr bullet over a 40gr charge of black powder, hence .44-40. It was second in popularity only to the .45 Colt in number of original Colt single actions made. Those chambered in .44-40 were rollmarked Frontier Six Shooter on the barrel.
The cartridge is absolutely not part of the .44 Russian/Special/Magnum family of cartridges, using a completely different case, and a slightly smaller-diameter bullet, though a lot of modern guns chambered in .44 WCF have bores intended for the wide variety of .429"-.430" bullets on the market.
Some old Colts won't chamber rounds with bullets larger than .425", even though the barrel spec is .427"

Unless you just really want 44-40 I would stick with something a little easier to find. They make 44 special cowboy guns
