Favorite 45ACP w/ 230gr FMJ recipe
I'm down to my last bit of 231 and am looking to experiment. What are your favorite recipes for 45ACP pushing a 230gr FMJ bullet? TiteGroup, V V N340? I'll be shooting this out of a Govt. 1911 and 5" barreled USP. Clean burning is a good thing.

Well since you already use 231 can't help there but I have ran up to 7.2 gr of N350 for pins about 935 fps.

My "standard" load for a 230 grain cast RN is 4.8 grains of 700X. This is good for about 840 ft/sec out of a Les Baer Premier II, duplicating hardball. It's a bit below published maximums for this bullet type. For a jacketed bullet, you might consider dropping down a few tenths of a grain.
IIRC, the GI load was 4.6 grains of Bullseye behind a 230 FMJ. It's probable that government arsenals used "non cannister" lots of Bullseye.

Do you just want to try something different from 231?
I've had very good results with 5.4 gr. of 231 with 230 LRN bullets. That's where I'd start with FMJ.
I've loaded a LOT of 230 FMJ with 6.2 gr of Unique. The so-called "Dirty Ole Unique" (mostly just soot) is not a problem in using jacketed bullets. The Bullseye load HankB mentioned is an old stand by. Best, Johnny Guest |

I've had good luck with (just plain) Clays. I haven't tried them all, but it's the cleanest I've found, and loads from 3.5 grains to 4.0 grains are nice performers. Besides that, it's cheap!

One of the few loads I have memorized, but always check YOUR loading book.
Starline Brass, 1.272 COL CCI300 primers. 4.9 grns Bullseye 230 Rem FMJ. Good luck

I've used 231,Tightgroup,AA#7,and plain "Clays" and the Clays performs best for me for target loads...I use #7 for my Ruger convertible and it works good for a heavy load.

I use accurate arms #2 and #5. 8.7 grains #5, 230 fmj gives an expected 927 fps in a 5" barrel ,oal 1.250". I really like to shoot 200 gr . lead Precision bullets behind 5.8 grains of AA #2, oal 1.190 for an expected 939 fps in a 5" barrel.
