I don't know a whole lot about the Chinese ones, but one thing to look for is the bolt/firing pin. If the firing pin is corroded bad enough to stick in fire position, it'll go full auto on ya. Not a common problem, but I saw it once. A friend of mine brought his out to the range to fire it for the first time and inadvertently emptied the magazine. Fortunately he had the presence of mind to keep it pointed downrange til it stopped. Imagine if he dropped it and ran like a little girl!

Of course the range employees were quite excited for a while there, and asked us to vacate the premises forthwith.

But, I still think the SKS is a great rifle for the money.

Check the bore

Check the trigger action and safety

(See if the hammer releases, just by bumping, on an empty chamber of course

Check to see if the firing pin rattles back and forth (if there isnt a spring loaded pin)

I've done the conversion. My SKS is a much safer gun.

Matching numbers is a plus. So is having the bayonet and cleaning kit included. If not included, use that as a bargaining chip if you're the haggling type.

I own 5 SKSs. For each one I had to rid the bolt/firing pin of cosmoline. Like dean said, shake the bolt, see if the firing pin rattles. If it doesn't, chances are it's caked with gunk. You need to disassemble the bolt and wipe everything down. Or, you can leave the bolt assembled and take a hair dryer to it, which melts away all the cosmo. I prefer the latter method. Works like a charm.

Also, never apply oil to the firing pin.

The sks survivors boards are helpful. Matching #s #1 firing pin is a easy fix with a springloaded murrays firing pin. Start buying up some stripper clips cause there going fast.
