Sig 1911

Gunners,

I have a co-worker whose son (late 20s, early 30s?) bought a handgun because of the feared ban.

This young man has never owned a firearm and he bought a Sig 1911, the one that is the commander size and paid about $900 for it.

My thoughts are for a novice that is a lot of gun and maybe he should have started out with something easier for the inexperienced.

P.S.: He is laid off and has children!

The first gun I ever bought was a shotgun, the second gun was a .44 magnum. Worked out okay for me.

I don't think there is any specific "first gun" someone should buy. If he's interested in the gun, that's what counts. Whether it's a .22 or .45 - he still has to learn how to shoot it. Might as well start with one he wants to own.

The Sig 1911 is an awesome choice. They are great 1911's. I have a Sig C3 CT Edition 1911 and love it.

While I would not recommend a 1911 as a first pistol, he has it and can learn to shoot it relatively well. As far as paying that much for a pistol in his economic situation, I can understand some second guessing but he has to be man enough to make and live with those kind of choices.

While I am not sure what your actual question is, the Sig 1911 is a great gun. If he took money intended for food to purchase, then shame on him, but it is his decision and not yours.

OP here,

It is my opinion that he would have been better off buying a Glock or Springfield and still had a quality firearm, and had more money for family needs and that maybe a lesser caliber would be better for a beginner.

I learned how to run a 1911 @18 years old in the Army. It's not that tough.

You are probably right, but it was his decision and it is too late now. Maybe you should buy it off of him for the price he paid and get him off the hook (if you can afford it). He can start over and you get a fine gun. If not, move along, not much you can do

He already made his choice. What's done is done. I'm glad he got something.

He just needs to practice a lot and that .45 is going to cost a pretty penny to practice with.

Could he have been better off getting a 9mm and pocketing the rest of the money according to the financial situation he's in? Yes..

Back to the first thing I said, he made a choice. It's said and done. He still made a darn good choice.

My most reliable .45 has been my SIG 1911

(My P220 is new to me and I'm awaiting a new magazine I ordered. ProMag's are garbage)

My first gun was a lightweight frame 1911.

Not the ideal first gun, but it's still a good one. The Sig 1911s are very fine models and great values. If someone wanted a 1911 for a first gun, the Sig would make an excellent choice, IMO.

My first firearm was a 1903 Springfield I bought when I was 18. My first handgun a Colt Commander when I turned 21.

1911s aren't as difficult to operate as a lot of people make them out to be.
