locking threads

i'm noticing locked threads popping up here and there....many of them are simply transfers, but some, notably a few in the legal/political are not...what do these threads contain that causes them to be locked so quickly?

They are most likely being locked because they are duplicates of another on-going thread or are over 100k in size. But there may be other reasons.
