Pre War Model 70's

When the Win Model 70 was introduced in the late 30's was the Target and or Varmint version available?

I've read that entry before, and read it again now. Am I missing the part where it talks about the target and or varmint configuration?

No one knows if the heavy barreled versions were available pre war?

A limited check indicates that three target rifles were available on or shortly after introduction of the Model 70. They were the National Match Target, in .30-'06 with a 24 inch barrel; the "Bull Gun" in that caliber plus .300 H&H with a 28" extra heavy barrel; and the standard target, with a 24" medium weight barrel, which was available in any standard caliber. All had target stocks.

The only Model 70 called a "Varmint Rifle" was introduced in 1955 in .243 Winchester only; it had a target weight (not an extra heavy) barrel.

Well, while we are on the subject, what I would like to know, is which model 70's came with stripper-clip slots milled into the receivers?

According to the Winchester Collectors site there are no factory records for the M70. However, it appears the 'Target' and NM were post war. 1949-63.

No mention of integral stripper clip guides anywhere.

Well, I could swear I've seen stripper-clip slots on a lot of old model 70 and model 54 Winchesters.
