Slamfire, the picture you posted is hilarious. It always amazes me that these type photos are available. I have done some stupid things in my life, but I never tell about them or take pictures of them. I guess what I am saying is that it amazes me that people tell the stories of their stupidity. I keep the secrets all to myself. I would have buried that rifle in a hole out back.
Just for the record, I have never blown up a rifle.

That BlueDot Blowup picture (and in-depth discussion) is found here:

http://thefiringline.com/forums/show...t+rifle+double

I thank the man who did show it, did admit it, did think through/share how it could have happened.
Please note also that all of the follow-on discussion/comments in that thread took the same constructive tact:

"There but for the grace of God..."

The most versatile rifle powder I can think of is Varget. I can work up a load for almost all my rifles with it if I wanted. Also it's very insensitive to temperature.

Reynolds, lets clarify something. Do you or don't you reload rifle calibers with pistol powders?

Quote:
I have done quite a bit of fire forming with pistol powder over the years.
No one is asking about that...

From the Blue Dot kaboom page:

Quote:
Following are photos of a .257 Wby Mag (Vanguard) that had a catastrophic failure apparently as a result of firing a round that had a double charge of Blue Dot.
The fact that this person's inattention to detail destroyed his gun has no bearing on this thread...

Many of us have and will continue to safely fire reduced velocity loads in rifles with 'fast pistol powders', using 'published' data...For me it is exclusively Red Dot as I inherited 'some'...

I shoot the same 160gr cast lead in .30-30, and .30-06...I shoot 158gr .359" truncated cones in my .35 Rem, and I even have round ball loads for both of the 30-cals that are hell on bunnies to 60 yards...
