.30 cal. carbine comparison

Gunners,

I simply cannot get the M1 carbine off my wish list.

In the best factory load, what does it compare to?

I have heard 357 mag, is that true?

What rifle round does it most closely compare?

Winchester 32 Self Loading is about the closest with a 165 grain @ 1400 fps
30 carbine=110 grain @ 1950-2000 fps
The 30 carbine is nowhere close to the 357 mag from a rifle.

Using soft point 110 gr ammo @ 1900 fps the .30 carbine's energy is similar to 125 gr .357 magnum rounds fired from a 6" revolver.
That said, the difference in handling, recoil, muzzle blast, ease of control between a carbine and a handgun is obvious.
The M1 carbine is simply a delightful little rifle to plink with or for home defense. Easy handling, light and with 15 or 30 rounds.
There's a good reason that the little carbine's prices have gone up and up and up, folks just like 'em.

According to a Federal Ammo Ballistics chart, a .30 carbine 110gr. has a muzzle energy of 906 F/Pounds. The .357 158gr. has a muzzle energy of 535 FP. The .30 leaves the muzzle at 2000 fps, the .357 on average about 1300 fps. Either one will do the job. I'm one of those who like .30 carbines. I owned a Universal years ago, but it was a BAD clone of the carbine. None of the parts interchanged. However, Plainfield carbines were almost direct copies of the military M-1, so much so that parts were interchangeable to a degree. I 'd love to have another, but even Plainfield 's prices are through the roof! By the way, the .357 figures were from a 4" barrel. The .30 was from a 18" barrel which will skew the results.

for plinking, you can't beat the 110 grain FMJ. Well, for non hand loaders that is.

For defense purposes, I like the Remington or Federal 110 grain SP. Recently, I added a little Bushnell red dot TR25 sight to my Quality Hardware carbine. This was the single best move I ever made with this rifle, as it now is a real contender.
The target here, was shot with 110 grain FMJ. Fired standing up, not from a rest. Other than that dang low shot, the group measures 3.5 inches.

Now here's a man that loves M-1 Carbines! Beautiful gun. Even has a wood hand-guard, which I love on carbines. Enjoy!

Velocette, you have me nailed. I do love Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles and carbines, and all full stocked carbines.

That one is beautiful!!
