.460 rowland conversion experience?

I came across this ---> http://460rowland.com/about/ in my usual pretending-to-be-paying-attention-during-a-pointless-class-but-really-just-browsing-gun-forums routine. Cut me some slack, I'm three weeks away from college graduation; it's a little difficult to concentrate.

I'm usually pretty skeptical by nature, particularly when it comes to stuff on the internet, but this caught my eye.

According to their website, the .460 Rowland "will propel a 185 grain bullet from a five inch barrel to 1550 fps." Impressive, Especially when you consider this round being packed into a Glock 21 or an XDM w/ 6" barrel conversion kit with 13 round magazines. There's a woods gun that has my attention. A powerful round from a reliable, (relatively) high capacity semi-auto.

I've tried to do some more research, but haven't found many firsthand accounts. Ballistics by the inch has the .460 rowland shooting a 230 grain bullet from a 5" barrel at 1213 FPS --> http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/460rowland.html but apparently tested only one weight and brand of ammo. Does anybody know of any other data on the .460 Rowland's performance?

I'm also wondering if anybody has any experience with their conversion kits. http://460rowland.com/authentic-460-rowland-onversions/

Thanks in advance!

Yes it is one heck of a round but, aside from reloading your going to have to order all your ammo and hope they are not out of stock when you want some.

I came across the .460 Rowland when searching for a 10mm XDM conversion which there is not one yet. I really like the XDM 5.25 but also really like the 10mm so it's Glock for me.

Rowland

I have been able to shoot the Rowland conversion a few times though I do not own one. The gun that I fired was a 1911.
It is a peppy cartridge, that much is obvious. I have used .45 Supers in my own 1911 and, even with the compensator on the Rowland, recoil was as or more brisk (subjective, I know). The loads used were hand loads. I do not know the particulars.

I have the Clark Custom kit installed in my Kimber Tactical Entry II full sized 1911 (originally for the .45 acp). The Rowland makes the gun a bit heavier and the muzzle break combined with the weight seems to make the gun more stable, and thus very accurate. It's also a very impressive looking combination (to the extent looks are important). I don't have a chrono but from the loading data (my son reloads) and from the felt recoil I'd say the rounds perform as advertised. By the way, the load is a handful - much more felt recoil than either then .45 acp or 10mm.

A negative (besides recoil): Because the slide spring needs to absorb so much more energy its a much stiffer spring (24 or 26 lbs?) which makes manually cycling the slide or performing a chamber check a more challenging excersize. More importantly, simply installing the spring (originally and after cleaning) is a challenge. It took me 20 minutes the first time as I just couldn't get the darn thing compressed! It gets "easier" with practice, but never easy. I'm looking at getting a graduated spring to help with this process.

In this pix is the Kimber with Rowland kit, next to a Dan Wesson Guardian 9mm.

I'm one of the BBTI guys (see my .sig) and I'm also a writer at Guns.com. Check out the following articles of mine:

http://www.guns.com/converting-a-glo...and-10990.html

Suffice it to say that I think that it is a *very* interesting cartridge, to the point where once the conversion kit for a Gen 4 Glock 21 is available, I'll be ordering one ....
