Berry's 155 gr HBRN 40 S&W
Long time no post, I moved and now have everything setup, including my reloading room I just did some testing with Berry's bullets 155gr HBRN and Power Pistol powder. I used 7.0 gr in about 14 rounds and 7.5 gr in another 14 round batch. I had a bullet get stuck in the barrel with the 7.0 gr batch and no issues with the 7.5 gr. The flash on both were big and bright, a lot more than expected. I thought I would share this loading experience. If you have any thoughts on this that would be great.

How well (accurate / reliable) did they shoot? I've heard a lot about the 124gr HBRN for 9mm and I would love to hear more about the 40 caliber version of this. From what I've heard (need to order me some of the 9mm 124gr HBRN to do my own testing), the 124gr bullets shoot very well given the longer ogive.

I have been loading mine with Unique and seem to have good results shooting 50 yesterday. I was shooting at steel targets with my P239 so I didn't have paper proof of accuracy.

I have the 185 HBRN for 45 ACP and so far out of two different guns I haven't had any good groups, I shoot several flat points and RS ,even 155 and 165 HBFP's in 40 S&W ,and haven't had problems with good accuracy ,just those.

One of the things that can effect accuracy is too tight of a crimp, especially on the hollow based bullets since there is less material for resistance to the crimp. I would pull a loaded round and see if you have created a deep waistline in the crimp area.

I thought I had 2 powders I loaded using the 155 grain Berry's RNHB but all I can find is one. I used the 155 grain RNHB bullet and 5.6 grains of HP-38 and this load worked well in my XDM 3.8 S&W 40. I believe I also loaded with Universal but don't see the load information. (I'm old and some times misplace things )
I found this load to be actuate and fun to shoot. |

Oh yea, my C.O.L. is 1.125 and a taper crimp of around .420 or .422. I might try a C.O.L. of 1.120 later and see how that works. All this for a S&W 40...
Later: After measuring it looks like the RNHB are coming out to be .423 or .422 and the 180 Hollow Point bullet (Berry's) was crimped at .421 and .422. A lot of reasons why this happens so don't over think it. Last edited by engineermike; June 2, 2011 at 12:46 PM. |

I edited my post cause I'm old and referred to a .45 crimp dimension, sorry if some of you young guys with hair are scratching. You old guys out there know what I'm talking about.

I worded my post kind of goofy, I was saying my 155 and 165 HBFP out of my 40 S&W were shooting great, it was just the 185 HBRN's in 45 ACP that are giving me trouble. I will look at the crimp and maybe not crimp some rounds at all , just feed them in 1 at a time to keep the bullet from moving under recoil, just to see how they shoot. Also do they seem to favor slower or faster powders? My 155's love 6.5gr N340 , oal=1.145, and 7.6gr-3N37 , oal=1.145,
The 165 HBFP like7.4gr-3N37 ,OAL=1.145,and 6.7gr Silhouette ,oal=1.145. |

So I wasn't losing my mind, keep the crimp between .469-.471" and you should have no problems.
