What are your thoughts on this pistol?

Some people don't seem to approve of external extractors on this platform. Outside of that, what kind of machining/quality can I expect from it? Thank you.

Workmanship is very good by all accounts,in addition to the external extractor
you also get a Swartz,an overtravel screw,an engraved warning,a beaver tail
safety grip and miscellaneous skeletons.good luck

A skeletonized trigger and hammer.
A Swartz firing pin block
A set screw in the trigger pad to compensate for excess play to positive stop
A modyfied extractor design
A stylized safety grip
An engraved sign warning of the absence of a magazine safety system

I usd to carry one of those I think it's excellent. I have about 4500 rds thru it not that that is a lot but it has been flawless. And S&W cust service is great at least for me. I have never had to use it for this gun tho.
BTW I thought it carried well.

I think they're producing a pretty good gun for the money ...but every gun they produce is part of a mass production operation ...its not like they spend much, if any, time on a bench with a gunsmith for fine tuning.

To me, the most critical part on a 1911 - is the quality of the trigger ...how it breaks and at what weight ( and with no creep, no slack, and no hitch in it...) ...and some production guns ( S&W, Colt, Kimber, etc....) have pretty crummy triggers in them ...and some are pretty good.../ its the luck of the draw...

Every 1911 trigger can be cleaned up ...or thrown away ...and a new trigger installed so worst case it'll cost you about $ 300 to have it cleaned up ..

My son got one very similar to that one about 4or 5 years ago, just before he shipped to Korea. I had the gun for a while. a "PD" model, I think. Very much like the one you linked to, but also has a forward rail mount underneath.

Brand new gun, very tight, very well made, very accurate, excellent trigger. Had some features I don't particularly care for, but that's a personal thing.

Be aware that grips made for the Colt (standard 1911A1) will not fit on the S&W pistol. The spacing of the grip screws is slightly different.

I don't have any personal experience with what they are making today, but see no reason to expect it to be less than satisfactory.

Well, I have one of the Scandium-framed, Commander-sized Smith 1911s, and I really like it.
I'm not enough of a traditionalist to be offended by the external extractor--I have had enough internal extractors that would wear or need adjustment--so some may consider the external an improvement.
Likewise, I am not offended by "real" sights, beavertails, skeletonized hammers/triggers, modern thumb safeties or speed bumps on grip safeties.

All in all, I think the S&W 1911s are a very good 1911 for the money.

Will do. Do you know how many mags it comes with? I would assume two, but the site doesn't seem to indicate. The zoomed picture of the grip shows the brand to be Wilson, which I hear are good.

SW1911 purchased about a year and a half ago, shoots more accurate than my SR1911

Usually comes with 2 mags. Though you're on the right track of getting the Wilson magazines to carry with it.

Contrary to what some people apparently believe, magazines supplied with the pistol by the factory aren't always bad ones. Try them first before deciding on something different. The two mags that came with a SIG 1911 pistol I purchased recently appear to be well-made and have functioned perfectly so far.
I certainly agree with Constantine and others who advocate replacing deficient factory mags with Wilsons. I also have had good luck with McCormick magazines.

Major +1 here. My SIG 1911 XO, has run flawlessly 750+ trouble free rounds. Not one issue of any kind.

It's good to have some really good spare or primary carry magazines anyways. I think if the OP doesn't have some Wilson's already, to just get a few.
