Hornady SPSX Bullets

Anyone tried Hornady SPSX's at velocities above 3400 fps? This is Hornadys max speed for 55 & 50 grain bullets. Would like to use them in my 220 Swift, but like to get 36-3700 fps if possible. Have loaded some with RL-15 to about 3600 by hornadys load guide, but cant find time to shoot due to wind, rain, and never ending honey-do list. Thanks to all who respond.

They will work, but I've had them start coming apart when going that fast(as in no hole in the target paper).

Thanks, Ben. I was beginning to think noone here had ever tried them. I was going to shoot them tonight, but had to work on an irrigation engine for a really good customer. This is what I love about these forums, they allow you to find find out what has worked well for others, and to find out info quickly. Thanks again, Andy

What's you twist rate on your barrel?

It isn't the linear velocity that tears them apart- It's the rotational velocity. They spin so fast they explode due to thier weak construction. Kind of like when you got flung off the merry-go-round when it got going fast enough you couldn't hold on.

Ben, the twist is 1 in 14". I found out centrifugal force is what tears these bullets apart when firing them in my 1 in 8" AR-15. Some of these never made it to 100yd target!!

That's slow enough they just might work. Another good one with similar construction are the speer varmit slugs.
